They didn't try to screw the consumer.
The sales we are seeing now are reward for that one E3 showing where we won against anti-consumer bullshit being put on the industry by Microsoft.
Snowball effect. Word of mouth is king, content is king.

Didn't try and screw the consumer, they was going to do what microsoft was going to do with the DRM then saw the backlash Microsoft got if it, if it would have worked for microsoft sony would of done the same thing, they came in with a cheaper price at launch and capitalised on Microsofts big mess, it just fell into place for them, didn't psn get hacked a couple of years ago and customers information stolen, i wouldn't trust Sony as far as i could throw them.

for the Hack, both Microsoft, Steam, and Sony's services had inssues with Hackers, nothing is 100% free of it. you think that they would do the Same just because they purchased Genkai ? (i think that this is the name, but i forgot it), until now they only used it for PS Now, and someone need to be pretty stupid to try to release something 100% Digital, in 2013, while the World's Average Internet is less than 3Mbs.
and for your first post that who purchased the PS4, are not gamers, this isn't true, if someone purchase Any dedicated Video Game device, so the person is a Gamer, anyone who purchased a Handheld, or a Home Console, or play on PC, is a Gamer.
