I am sure Sony would like it merged, personally I think that merging it would be misleading because it is a different console.

Except it plays the same games in the same format (homeconsole), so even though it's a different SKU, it's the same platform.

N3DS and 3DS actually have more legitimacy in being considered different platforms (there are N3DS exclusive games), but they're considered the same platform. So don't count on PS4 numbers being split. Otherwise we'd need a 3DS, 3DSXL, N3DS, N3DSXL, and 2DS bar.

If its consider the same, because its PS4 and the same platform, then it could well become the best selling console of all times. 400 USS for such a powerfull console now and let say 250 for the old one will make sony sell these consoles like pancakes. Think about every 3rd wolrd country where people cant afford a PS4 for 400 USS. They will buy the old PS4 for 250 for sure.
