It would have done exponencially better with advertisment though. Nintendo isn't using one of their biggest advantage over most mobile apps.

Yeah but profit isn't the main objective of Miitomo, it's mostly here to promote MyNintendo and Nintendo Account, so for actual Nintendo console owners. Word of mouth will be enough for this one.
