NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080

rough translation:
The new generation of NVIDIA GPU, codenamed Pascal degree, perhaps to be launched as GTX1080 will be released in May.

As the report mentions NVIDIA will be using the GeForce GTX 1080 naming for the “GP104” product. This is not confirmed so we do not know if NVIDIA will be using the 1000 series naming scheme or changing it to something more simple. We do know that NVIDIA is designing the chip to keep costs low enough to score big in price-performance and and potential price-war with AMD. To keep things very cost effective NVIDIA is likely to skip out on HBM2 with this chip. Instead with “GP104” NVIDIA will make use of either GDDR5 or GDDR5X. It will more than likely be GDDR5X as the new GDDR5X standard which offers double the density of GDDR5 and faster speeds as well. HBM2 would be reserved for NVIDIA’s big Pascal chip which would more than likely make up the next TITAN product.

GP104-based cards should ship with a single 8-pin PCI-Express power connector. This will be a nice upgrade from the current dual 6-pin approach. A single 6-pin connector is 75W while the 8-pin is 150W. Cards should also have two DisplayPort, one HDMI, and one DVI output connections.

The “GP104” is going to be built on the 16nm FinFET process and be produced by TSMC. NVIDIA will unveil the first GP104-based products by April at their Graphics Technology Conference (GTC) and then make them available to market in May. This could be a late-May launch right before Computex. This could also give NVIDIA’s add-in-board partners a great chance to show off their custom cards at Computex.

Besides all that stuff, the fact of the matter is that the GTC, Nvidia’s GPU Technology Conference; http://www.gputechconf.com/  is in about three weeks away, so expect the unexpected, or some confirmation on this rumor.

What do you think about that name though? GTX1080?

Sounds like it's good enough for 1080p! =D

Seriously though, who cares about the name for a graphics card?

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

I'm sure Nvidia will change the naming scheme for these new cards, they always do it when there's a change in the number of digits (they went from the 9800 GTX to the GTX 280). Besides, as OdinHades has pointed, these cards have 4K gaming in mind, and it will be hard to market it right with the 1080(p) name.

And if the card launches in May/June, it will have GDDR5 memory chips. The GDDR5X variant won't go into production until summer, so it will be impossible to use them when the card is rumored to launch. That said, nothing stops the board partners (Asus, Gigabyte, EVGA, MSI, etc) from launching variants of the card with that new memory once it becomes available.

And last, the 8-pin power connector ensures a total TPD of 225W max, although I don't think it will use that much power. Given that Pascal is expected to deliver 2xPerformance/Watt over current Maxwell cards, it should be a nice upgrade from what's now on the market.

Oh, and that article doesn't mention it, but the card will come with 8GB of VRAM compared to today's 4GB of the GTX980 and 6GB of the 980Ti.

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

i would like just GTX 80

but 10 80 is fine, too

Let me just play devils advocate here. Nothing stopped MS from calling their 3rd XBOX, the XBOX One. lol
