I had this train of thought when I built my computer 4 years ago. They don't clear video cards out. So there's no point. You're actually better off spreading the cost of a 980 over the cost of mid range cards every few years. Like, I have a 560 ti in my computer right now. It's just as useless today as a 580 ti is. One cost me less than half as much.
