Forums - Sales Discussion - Japan's Best Sellers: One Year Anniversary Edition (DQB [Vita] #1 SW, N3DSLL #1 HW)

Week 1, 2016 (Jan 04 - Jan 10)

Week 2, 2016 (Jan 11 - Jan 17)

Week 3, 2016 (Jan 18 - Jan 24)

Week 4, 2016 (Jan 25 - Jan 31)

January

- The new year begins! There are isolated positive results, but as a whole it was a rather weak month for hardware and software.

- The New Nintendo 3DS LL was just barely able to outdid the PS4 for February, one got essentially no major releases while the other one got two, as a whole it was a rather positive month for PlayStation with a good deal of hardware and software moved, as said before, the PlayStation 4 did well, so did the Vita. With the holiday effect over Wii U is back at dead levels, PS3 keeps fading away and Xbox One is essentially a ghost.

- At the end it was Dragon Quest Builders on Vita the best selling game of the month, dashing my prediction, the game sold better than expected, and that's always a good thing, having a Vita game on top of the chart is rarity, so to start a year with that is impressive. Apart from that other January releases like Yakuza: Kiwami and Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, both remakes, did well. Old games like Monster Hunter, Minecraft, Yokai Watch and Splatoon also did alright.

- For the first month of the year, all hardware SKUs but the PlayStation 4 are down from January 2015 and down year on year, software as well, everything but the PlayStation 4 (who had a tremendous bump from January 2015) and the PlayStation Vita are down year on year in what was a somewhat mediocre start for 2016, things shouldn't get better in February as compared to February 2015 there is nothing big coming out.

What to expect next month?

This

4th (25 days of tracking)

[PS4]Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4

10th (19 days of tracking)

[PS4]Valkyria Chronicles Remastered

[3DS]Shin Megami Tensei IV: FINAL

18th (11 days of tracking)

[PSV][PS4]Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna

[PSV]Kan Colle Kai

[PS3][PSV][PS4]Attack on Titan

[PS4]Street Fighter V

[3DS]Mario & Sonic at Rio Olympics

Compared to the huge February 2015 there's essentially nothing coming out, just a bunch of middleware releases, so expect things to look worse year on year, on both hardware and software; Vita and PS4 might be able to maintain the growth they've had from 2015 but don't expect for the growth to increase.

Due to the boring month is rather hard to predict what the best selling game of the month will be, but from what I see it's down to three games, Vita's long delayed Kancolle Kai, 3DS' Shin Megami Tensei IV: FINAL and this month's big game, Dragon Quest Builders on Vita. My money is on Kancolle, but as said before, this one isn't easy to predict.

As for hardware, well seeing how close the two were this month it might be the PlayStation 4, as said before, hard to tell, don't be surprised if the 3DS or the Vita sold the most though.

Also another February with no Wii U games.

No point on posting the 10 best selling games of the year list.

Here's an addition for this year's threads.

Comparing performance year on year for hardware and software should be fun. As said before everything is down but the PlayStation 4. On software everything down but PS4 and PSV.

Awesome post as usual! Although I think you accidentally put down February instead of January in your second bullet point about 3DSLL outselling PS4.

Side note: Poor XB1, it's not even showing up in the pie portion of the pie chart anymore

What a great start to 2015 for PlayStation! It takes the total software and hardware for the month!

And the ps4 sold 100% more than the Wii U. It's really laying down a marker it wants to take the lead in Japan this gen once and for all. February, March, April and May will be good for ps4 hardware.

Unless the Vita or Wii U get jumpstarted, everything but PS4 will be down yoy constantly. 3DS and Vita too old in Japan, XB1 and PS3 dieing out, Wii U no software releases.

How Xbox One, managed to go down 73% from last year, if Xbox One, already had very low numbers ?.

After what you said about February I really wonder what came last year February

Sad to see Wii U back in the 4 digit range only on week 4, but is to be expected..

By doing even worse?

Anyways its got about 0.11% market share.

Just think if they could sell 10 times as much, they could probably be over 1% of the market

Ps4 is smashing the WiiU like theres no tomorrow. Im not sure on the difference in life time sales but how much does the ps4 have to sell to over take it?

The regular leggy 3DS and Wii U software, plus Minecraft, still continuing to hang around I see. I feel that DQ Builders (Vita) will join them in being on the charts for at least a while yet. Also nice to see PS4 up YOY.

As for next month yeah it's looking pretty bare. Kan colle and SMT IV: Final are looking to be the only things of interest sales-wise.
