Forums - Sales Discussion - NPD Fallout: Sony Blames April on Lack of Software

I don't think they'll sink below 60k for May. That would be insane.

I know. But what has PS3 done so far but sink below our lowest expectations?

People were debating whether PS3 would hit 100K in April. Slipping below 100K at all was said to be disaster, and no one was predicting below 90K.

But they only sold 82K. Below EVERYONES expectations. And May isn't any better software-wise. So instead of getting into the debates of whether they'll drop below 75K, I'm going to go ahead and get really bearish.

59K USA NPD PS3 MAY. Consider that a prediction.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

As a point of reference - the ps2 never dropped below 100K during it's life and only dropped below 200K twice, 2nd month of release in Nov-2000 (supply constrained) and Apr-2004 (Sold 188,000). The Xbox 360 has never dropped below 100k. The only console to do it often was the GameCube - and we all know how that turned out. May and June's NPD will be very interesting. 3 month's in a row of sub-par 100k results would be a very bad message to send to developers.

If PS3 drops below 70K this month then its over without a doubt

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Urgh. Sony fanboy's may have to wait till next gen at the rate this gens going. I wonder if they will ever give up or just keep claiming that its going to ramp up later and that it has a long lifespan?

The bit I find amazing and not mentioned much is the amazing PS3 Software drought. Two games in May and both multiplatform. The thing is, Sony knew how important games are AND their console was delayed by laser problems. Plus before the release it was taken for granted that PS3 would win this generation. So where are the games?

Words from the Official VGChartz Idiot

WE ARE THE NATION...OF DOMINATION!

Sony really is in a mess, on one hand they must be thinking "we cant take much more of a loss on the ps3 (through discounting the price)" but its getting to the point where the PS3 is becoming irrelevant they need to bite the bullet and cut the price, but even $100 isnt enough it will still be $499 MS will wait for the PS3 to drop in price before they cut theirs (as they are actaully making a profit on the system) The PS3's software release schedulr seems totally borked, sure Heavenly Sword and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and for 'fall' but thats at least 4 probably 5 months away...

Thats a good point. Does it indicate just how difficult it is for developers to program for the PS3? Its been said that its the hardest to program, but I was expecting more games out sooner for it because all the devs thought it was the next big thing.

These are traditionally the slow months anyways. Nintendo and MS aren't pulling out their big guns for the spring, either. Holiday Season 2007 will be the decider for the future of the PS3 (And wii for that matter). I think Xbox360 could weather a mediocre holiday season if things don't go well (though i predict that Xbox should do just fine if not great). If PS3 sells really well this upcoming season, then the system will do just fine for the next 5 years. If it bombs, in that it doesn't sell through the roof, then Sony should hit the panic button.
