Forums - Sony Discussion - Great news for those who want Linux(steamOS) on PS4

fail0verflow, a group known for their work on Wii, PS3 and Wii U(unreleased) exploits, have published a blog entry on their plans for PS4. They have shown a video of a linux boot and running pokemon(ps4 has games now, hell yeah) on the system. They have demonstrated interest in optimizing a linux port for it, and mentioned the name SteamOS. PS4 is considered an insecure system(very opposite to the Vita), fail0verflow are not releasing any exploit themselves which they claim might lead to piracy, but when someone does(they expect someone will), Linux will be sorted out on the system, in hope the main focus of an eventual PS4 jailbreak is not piracy.

If this happens before I buy a PS4, I will buy a PS4 sooner. Linux on the PS4 would be pretty awesome. Linux on previous platforms wasn't that great - mostly because of their specialized architectures. That isn't a big deal for the PS4 though. Plug a keyboard and mouse into the PS4, switch out its HDD, do a few other tweaks, and you'll have a pretty nice programming platform, server, etc, etc. Sure the CPU isn't that great, but if it is optimized well it should sort out those limitations.

Lol Pokémon.

impressive stuff

wow imagine buying a decent PC with the size of 2 lapstops, which can play blueray and offline PS4 games just for 349$

Why doesn't Sony just release an app that makes PS4 into a dual boot PS4/Steambox, where's the down side? PC gaming and PS4 gaming in one box connected to your TV, for $349. If the exploit is just around the corner beat the jailbreakers to the punch.

1) it would make a vulnerable entrypoint for hackers, ps3 was only ever jailbroken because of otherOS. Even if an exploit is released, they can probably patch it.

2)that would imply in running Steam/gog/cracked PC games. This includes games on PSN and even Sony-funded like SFV.

3)this could make console platforms lose relevance compared to PCs.

Those 3 points exactly^

Just get a PC then. For this price you can do way better than a PlayStation 4  and still read blurays

I agree.

Building a "Base" PC for US$350 while not impossible is IMHO rather stupid especially if you want to play half decent games although to be fair "half decent" is subjective.

Country to what the wannabe PC designers say if you are a serious gamer you are going to spend well over US$1000 on a decent gaming machine and like it or not you also need to take into account the monitor and the graphics card. Of course if you are using a Linux distribution then at least the operating system is free although your gaming choice is limited, but not impossibly limited since Steam does have quite a few native games for Linux, although you do have to pay for the decent ones.

Actually I did get a first release PS3 (still got it and it still works) at launch but never used the "Other OS" feature so I did not miss it when an optional patch came out to remove it.

I just recently built a desktop with a Skylake i7-6700 chip-set (ie. latest release) for around US$1000 and that did include the monitor and graphics card as well as the latest free Fedora Linux operating system. However since I am not really a PC gamer preferring consoles instead I got a 24" IPS monitor and used the Skylake motherboard graphics. Nothing flash mind you but it does everything that I want and more.

To make my PC into an acceptable gaming rig all I need is a decent graphics card with a monitor to suit and that is going to cost well over US$350.

My PC cost me about $750 after tax with my current hardware (including upgrades.) It plays the Witcher 3 at 1080p High (some Ultra settings) 45 - 50fps, Fallout 4 maxed at 55-60 fps, Dragon Age Inquisition maxed at locked 30 fps, Watch Dogs high/very high locked at 30 fps, emulates PS2, Wii, GC games flawlessly, etc, etc.

Here's the hardware:

i5 4690k @ 4.4 Ghz ($210)

r9 280x ($200)

8 GB DDR3 1600mhz ($50)

240 GB SSD ($70)

ASROCK Z97 Motherboard ($90)

1 TB HDD ($45)

Osrock Case ($40)

Corsair 500 W PSU ($20)

Keyboard and Mouse ($20)

Operating System (free, but windows 7 keys can be found for $20)

Today you can buy a PC that outpaces this quite decently for the same price. And my PC already decently outpaces the PS4 by about 30% better performance depending on the application. If i cut out extras (like my HDD or SSD) and went for a cheaper CPU this PC would still perform better than the PS4 for less than $600.

What do you play your PS4 on? A potato? Why not include the television/monitor into that price?
