Dude...look at the numbers of the original Xbox, look at the numbers of the 360 and look at the growth of Sony's marketshare once they joined the industry. The numbers are there. I've actually posted it and people still didnt know what to think. Sony increased the gaming industry to levels that threatend the PC market in the late 90's. Microsoft was prompted to join the industry and purely focused on cutting down their marketshare and succeeded with the 360 by wooing early adopters to the 360 because they realized multiplats sell consoles. Once they had all of the third party on board Microsoft replaced Sony as the alternative once Sony revealed their price point.
So again here is list:
Look at the market growth between the era the PS1 entered the market, and look how much it grew by the end of the PS2 era. Sony loses nearly half of their marketshare during the PS2 and somehow Microsoft sells over 80 million from the gen earlier having 25 million? Nintendo didnt have those numbers (the gen earlier) and Nintendo increased the market in that same gen by penetrating a new audience that no one thought to penetrate (with the Wii).
The PS2 sold between 150-160 million consoles....and somehow both end their gens within the high 80 millions?
Things that make you go.....hmmmm.
