Forums - Website Topics - Rate threads

You know how some threads fail and some are really good. I would like to see an option where you could rank a thread forewarning people who don't want to go to a failing thread not to go. It would be a really good addition to the site.

Only if the user has >500 posts....Then no random ppl could destroy the thread...

I don't think I've *ever* seen a good rating system. It's either unfair and people bitch or too fair and people still bitch. There's no in between.

Like with your 500+ posts rule, what about the members who just aren't really vocal and maybe make a post or two a day if that? They could be at 300 posts but been a member long than you. They contribute but they just don't feel the need to post about ever little thing.

And then what about people making nothing posts just to boost their post count so they can vote? They can still stick within all the guidelines and still be incredibly annoying.

No, there's just no good way to rate threads or posts. People will always bitch and it will always turn out badly.

Just edited this into my other thread about site improvements...

Well then they would have to have joined for at least 2 weeks , and have a post count over 50 or 100.

Alright, today I make 5 account. In 2 weeks I can start spamming thread ratings whatever direction I want.  When someones thread suddenly drops to a low rating inevitably bitch and the thread gets hopelessly off topic.

That is what the post count is for. I don't think the person is going to want to do 100 posts on 5 different accounts just so they could rate a thread low. By the time they even get all of those posts the thread could be gone and dead.

You've obviously never been on a board where systems just like you're suggesting have been implemented.  you would be surprised the lengths people go through just so they can troll specific people.  Believe me, look on any board where there is any kind of meaningful rating system and every thread that is rated below average will have people bitching.

Sure, some of those threads will get rated down and deserve so it won't matter that the people bitch but others won't and that bitching will derail a perfectly good thread.

Now lets pretend I don't like you.  Every time I see you post I'm going to rate down your post the lowest possible and I will always rate your threads as low as possible.  It doesn't matter I only have one account, I only need one.  You see that you're constantly getting rated down in every post you make (since I can easily see all your posts in your profile) and you begin bitching.  You bitch in your threads and you probably even make a thread to call out the person trolling you.  From there only bad things happen.

Now imagine that everyone on this site has somebody that doesn't like them.  If you think about it, that's not a hard thing to imagine.  Now you have every thread being rated down for no reason at all and you have people constantly bitching about being needlessly rated down.

Again, believe me that these do not work

I see what you mean. The only way I could think we could combat this is if somebody rates a 5 or lower they have to give a reason why. I also think it should only be for threads rather than posts , because the minus one wouldn't really count to much against the average rating. It would be a good idea if everybody was fair , but some people are really bias.

I think that a thread rating would be full of win. It's like rating the games. But simpler. Thumbs up or down. I think that it'd be full of win.
