Forums - Sony Discussion - Until Dawn Sequel/Spin-off on the Cards

By now it’s no secret that Sony didn’t fully realise what they had on their hands with Super Massive Games “sleeper hit” Until Dawn. The big question now is what is the future of the franchise? Well during an interview, over on PlayStation LifeStyle, Super Massive Games Executive Producer, Pete Samuels, offered us a little insight. When questioned on what we can expect from Supermassive next he said the following:

“I think you should expect the team to build on what we’ve did with Until Dawn, whether it’s in horror or in other genres. We’re already working on one thing that does that, while exploring other avenues for our other teams in anticipation of them finishing their current projects. We do talk internally about what Until Dawn 2 could be, as it clearly can’t be a sequel in the traditional sense, with the same characters facing the same threat, not least of which because in different stories some or all of them are already dead! We’ve investigated other ways we could do Until Dawn 2 but it probably is a little early to be discussing that.”

The end of the first sentence, “whether it’s in horror or in other genres,” seems to confirm that the Butterfly Effect will return in some capacity. The second half of the quote shows that the development team is really interested in exploring different takes on the Until Dawn franchise, they’re just not entirely sure what angle to approach a sequel from. The most interesting part, however, comes from the centre of the quote from when he talks about “exploring other avenues” for when Supermassive’s other teams complete what they’re currently working on. This implies that their other teams will take the Until Dawn engine and mechanics into another genre, this would free up the actual Until Dawn team to work on a sequel for their game.

All in all it seems like the Butterfly Effect that made Until Dawn so special and unique will more than likely be returning in a sequel as well as making an appearance in a couple of other genres. If you haven’t checked out Until Dawn yet you should, The Games Cabin even has you covered with a review.

The PS5 Exists.

They should just go with horror again, just another trope. instead the isolated cabin they should do a nightmare at elm street or poltergeist scenario.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

Until Dawn needed to be longer, or at least have more branching paths.
