Forums - Sales Discussion - Can the WiiU outsell the PS Vita?

I doubt it.

After what Sony just did to Vita at the TGS conference, Vita looks much worse off. I still think it will outsell the WiiU lifetime, but it will definitly be a close race. Hopefully Sony has a new handheld in the works for 2016 - 2017, and they finally get it right. I like what I am hearing about NX so far. Whichever one brings me a handheld gaming phone will get a lot of my money.

Sony are done with handheld gaming. They will just ride the Vita out as long as 3rd parties are prepared to make content for it and Vita owners are prepared to buy software for it. New colours would suggest it's still being manufactured.

It's almost 12 months since Sony's last notable Vita release. That strategy may well shift more hardwre than anyone would expect though. There are a few notable titles still on the horizon that may prove popular and there have been quite a few announcements at TGS. Look to outnumber the number of Wii U announcements considerably from what I have seen?

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

(1) aside from fatal frame and xenoblade (which I already addressed), there are only Nintendo like games coming out (aimed at being family friendly with a cartoonish appeal). Once again that audience is most likely already on the wii u. It may move consoles, but most certainly not a significant amount.

(2) Are you kidding me? The wii was labeled last gen by many many people especially towards the end of the last gen. With regards to sales it showed dramatically as the wii had a huge drop off and the ps3 and xbox 360 rose to popularity.

Power is huge. While it may not be a huge factor near the start of a gen (since people still need to figure out the tech), it is a necessity near the end of a generation in order to continue producing the most impressive games. Put it this way. Next year, vita still has the potential to produce games on par with the 3ds. Wii u simply won't be able to match ps4 and xbox one games.

(3) So you are telling me that the wii u having the shortest life span, 4 years, while having the worst sales (aside from virtual boy) is a coincidence?

(1)You have some people that only love Star Fox or Pokemon from Nintendo games so they didn't buy Wii U because they didn't have reason, this espacily goes for Zelda, this espacily goes for Zelda, you have tons a people that only love Zelda and buy console only for Zelda (and yes some of them already played Zelda WW and didn't want to buy Wii U because just that game). Also you have some people that are on edge to buy Wii U, they just need right exclusive (games that I already mentioned) to push them over the edge or price cut.

(2) I said Wii was labeled like last gen by many many people, but that didn't stopped Wii to sell 100m and to be best selling console of that gen, so no, power isn't a problem. Wii had a huge drop in sales because Nintendo stopped to supported and Wii owners go to different platforms, and I already said that Wii U needed to launch earlier.

(3) If NX will launch next year and Wii U have life span of 4 years, I dont think that would be coincidence (obviously is because of bad sales), but like I said, I dont think in that case new console would rushed, it just means that Wii U has little shorter life span than usual. But truth is that we still dont know what is NX, Nintendo said that NX isnt simply replacment for 3DS or Wii U.

(1) people like starfox or pokemon, but no one goes out to buy a console for one game. Not only that, but this new edition of starfox isn't wowing anyone thus far, and the upcoming pokemon is a spin off fighting game. As I recall, Hyrule Warriors was also a spin off of a great franchise, but that didn't move much consoles. If both smash bros and mario kart could barely edge the wii u into 10 million consoles, then I am also not optimistic that zelda alone can edge out 2 million more consoles. History shows this. Mario kart double dash and smash bros melee are what rescued the gamecube, not wind waker (despite amazing reviews). While the wii u has room for a price cut, so does the vita so I don't know why you're bringing that up.

(2) Again, read what I said earlier. Power is not a huge issue for people early in a gen. This is because devs are still getting used to hardware from new gens. It does become really important for later in a gen. This is why people still go out and buy way more ps3's than the wii. This shift occurred before Nintendo completely abandoned the wii. This shift ocurred around the time Nintendo threw out Skyward sword and mario galaxy 2. If power is not an issue, than why have 3rd party developers abandoned the wii u before the ps4 and xbox one came out?

(3) It most certainly seems that the new console is coming out waaay too early. The fact that it is publicized far earlier than the ps4 and xbox one successors is a huge indicator. Nintendo hasn't said whether it is a replacement for the wii u, but I distinctly recall them saying that if they were to start making a game now, it would go over to the NX and not the wii u. The only reason for this is because the NX will be the wii u's (and maybe 3ds) successor.

If the NX releases mid next year then probably not.

(1) You cant say that no one will buy console for just one game, certanly some people will, and I dont they they will buy console for just that game, you have more people that are on edge to buy console and that game is what will push them over edge to buy console. We cant know how many consoles Hyrule Warriors moved, but certanly moved some consoles. I bring price cut because that is thing that can push some people over to buy console same like exclusive game.

(2) Bad point, yes devs are still getting used to hardware from new gens, but that aplies too all consoles not just for PS3/Xbox360, also PS3/Xbox360 much better graphic than Wii on launch too. People still buy PS3 way more than Wii because Wii was literally casual maschine and later people just go to different platforms. 3rd party developers abandoned Wii U because terrible Wii U sales, not because of hardware, we didn't see 3rd party abandoned Wii in first year despite of power.

(3) How exactly 4 years instead typical Nintendo's 5 years is "waaay too early"!? Of Course they will publicize new console before PS4/XboxOne because Wii U is released one year later than PS4/XboxOne and Nintendo console have life span of around 5 years and this will probably have year shorter life. We still don't know anything for sure.

Ok. So now that Star Fox is delayed to 2016, what is going to drive Wii U during Christmas? What lineup is there going to be to make it get ahead of Vita?

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

Previous Wii U hits, Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros, Splatoon...Wii U in holiday season usually sell 2-3x better than Vita.

As lame as they are, AC Amiibo festival and Mario Tennis have more mainstream appeal than all Vita holiday games combined.

And of course, let´s not forguet about XCX.

WiiU is still going to sell 2 - 3 times more than Vita this holidays, as people buying a new console also look to the rest of the games there, not only the new ones, and Nintendo has almost the 60% of their sales on holiday season.

People also look to a system's future though. Something which has looked woeful for Vita since 2013, but now also looks equally dire for Wii U for the first time since release. (there was always the big title that was going to spark a sales rally on the horizon for Wii U previously)

That title was Zelda and guess what, is still there but now Pokken makes it company.
