I've often thought about that point too. The only problem though is that that game was directed by Sakaguchi and that was the last game he directed before leaving the company. Unfortunately there is a clear parallel to the decline of the series and his departure from it.

One more recent sign of hope though actually is the way in which they've handled XIV. I only played a couple of weeks of it but the game clearly tries to appease to older fans of the series. Through some blatant fanservice yes like Magi-Tek mounts and Triple Triad, but also in the Tolkein style art and setting which was a core of the first 5 games and IX.

Ah cool, I never played FFXIV but I did play a lot of XI, was a fun game if a bit ridiculous as far as grind is concerned. Glad to hear they're responding to the input of the players!

I've actually always liked their mix of medieval and proto-steam tech, including the airships (always loved the airships lol). It's probably why I liked IX so much... XI actually had that setting as well.

Aren't they modern looking humans driving around in a car in XV though? That was the first disappointing reveal for me.

Yeah lol with designer clothes and haircuts. I've got nothing against modern-futuristic settings for RPGs. I like some of the Star Ocean, Persona and Tales games that are in those settings. It's just not what I come to the Final Fantasy games for, especially if XIII is their best effort at depicting a futuristic Final Fantasy world.

I've also preferred the games where they mix technology in an odd way, but so that it works. Usually by having the empire/villain faction of the game being the one that holds all the technology.

I must be the only person in the world who thought Vayne was a good antagonist. Kefka was good for his time, but not incredible. I loved Sephiroth. Will be hard to top him.

He was good but in my view, he wasn't the main one. Infact FF12 had no real main threat in a sense. FF6, 7, 8 and X had defined ones.

Hmm, pie.

But no one can top Sin! lol

I actually really liked the Sin angle they took, it was a very unique villain, not so much a scheming, sinister force, but rather a tragic and impending reality. The story in X was really strong through most of it.

Yeah I agree, they've done that a few times. My favorite approach is when the technology is simply the remnants of a past civilization and they're attempting to figure out how to use it. Final Fantasy Tactics may have been my favorite setting for that reason, with the medieval atmosphere, presence of magic/summoning, and the occasional person like a mechanic who'd figured out how to make some use of the simpler relics he found.
