Smash actually didn't really help the series at all. The introduction of Marth, Roy and Ike didn't do anything to the Fire Emblem sales. The sales actually decreased from each game. Awakening had already sold almost 140m before the announcment of Robin/Lucina.

Awakening was just released at a VERY good time with good marketing. Smash helped some but not a ton. I think they were just lucky with this one. (Which their luck will continue as I believe Fire Emblem is going to always continue to sell well now.)

They did release it at a good time. It also helps that the game was really good and accessible. The other games were just good. Not amazing, but good. Best in the genre imo, but the genre doesn't seem to have much competition. Maybe Fire Emblem's success will inspire sega to release some more Shining Force.

Too accessible, too easy because of the new (good)  gameplay mechanics and weak story/characters. Previous games were a lot better IMO, too bad they didn't sell that much (too niche...).

I really enjoyed Awakening so this is great news. IS must be really happy about the game's performance.

I guess this serie is not niche anymore. I think "IF"can sell even more.

Wow, the game beat the previous record holder in de series by almost a million units then O.O

Fire Emblem Awakening, and by extension the franchise, is more popular than those numbers. It has been featured in many news outlets like Youtube videos and gaming website as "the best 3DS game". Nintendo saw its potential and now we have the crossover with SMT and FE:IF, which I expect would sell more than Awakening.

I can't help but compare it to Persona 4 Golden on Vita. It might have only sold 0.91m (according to vgchartz) but the game that was once only popular among JRPG nerds is now considered to be "the best game" on the device. The series became a lot more popular than it was before, which is one of the reasons why Persona 5 has all this hype on PS3/PS4 from people who played the previous instalment and the ones who couldn't.

The game is as easy or hard as you want it to be. I have over 300 hours in hard classic with no grinding (I never bought the DLC), and for a harder difficulty what I do is hard classic with no grinding and no pair ups, I also dont play the spotpass chapters.

I dont understand people who grind, reclass a lot of times, use eugenics to make game breaking units, and then complain about the game being too easy.

It seems as it is better to give people less options.

Wow, that's impressive for what I consider to be a niche series in FE. No doubt Smash helped out an awful lot but well deserved; great game.

the reality is there are limited quality choices in the genre- Fire Emblem games will continue to do very well if they keep coming out in high quality installments

Path of Radiance Radiant Dawn was in my opinion, and a lot of others, the best Fire Emblem games and both of them only sold about 1m together. High quality doesn't always ensure high sales.
