Forums - Gaming Discussion - Kickstarter Gaming Idea Fails!

Following the success of the Yooka-Laylee video game kickstarter, I thought it would be fun to see gaming kickstarter which failed.

Bad Kickstarter game idea number 1:

Thomas The Tank Engine RPG:

Yes someone was actually thinking of making a Thomas The Tank Engine RPG, considering everything I highly doubt this game would have been popular since Thomas: The Tank Engine fans usually only play on mobile phones and most RPG fans are unlikely to be fans of the show. This was shown in the public support of this kickstarter as it only managed to raise 130 british pounds out of the needed 20,000 british pounds.

Bad Kickstarter game idea number 2:

Lore:

Lore was supposed to be a game which implemented diffuculty into modern gaming together with the openess of Minecraft. It seems though that backers were not really feeling the game ( considering the awful art work used I wouldn't either ) and at the end it only managed $2,671 out of $150,000.

Most of the "inspired by random Japanese classic game from the 80s/90s" by Westerners game.

I feel sorry for people who pledged money to Soul Saga.

I would have liked to see the Thomas the Tank Engine rpg. Imagine a battle between Sabin from FF VI and Thomas XD

You know it deserves the GOTY.

"Thomas The Tank Engine RPG"

Those words together made me laugh my butt off.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

How exactly is that a fail? They got enough support and it looks to me like they are hard at work on the game and are giving regular updates.

Because it doesn't look like what they promised originally. For one they changed the art style. For 2 it doesn't look close to bringing back the JRPG charm of old, but you'd know that if you looked at some early gameplay. But "early gameplay!" yes, the assets, like environments they're building for the game just look mediocre.

It's like those failed experiments last gen of giving 3d graphics to 2d sidescrollers.

The biggest problem with these isn't their concepts, but their presentation. There's no video of either, and the Thomas the Tank one doesn't have any real screenshots or anything... it's just an idea. I could go on Kickstarter and be like "I have an idea for a platformer with these mechanics etc etc" but without showing any work, I'm just yet another person who potentially won't get any work done. I've done music for several indie games that didn't pan out, mostly because the project leader gets art, music, design done but then hits a wall with programming, and the entire thing falls apart. People want to see some proof that the game might actually get made.  I pretty much require projects I'm going to work with to have a working game engine before I even consider starting working for them now.

The second one, "Lore," is a step in the right direction, but still comes across as a guy just playing around in Maya and Unity more than actually making a game. I think its biggest problem is also the rewards on the right. The English phrasing is kind of ambiguous and a lot of them are very long-winded. It looks like you never actually get the final game with any of them since they say "buy the game of steam are the website when its complete." The only screenshot that looks great is the Hades one, and it's just a mock-up by some guy on deviantArt. It would have been cool if that were representative of the final art style though.

I want a Thomas the Tank Engine RPG :(

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Sometimes Ill peruse the video game section of Kickstarter to see all the bad projects. Partially for humor and partially to learn.

Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League

Lore.

Ok, that is terribly wrong.
