Forums - Gaming Discussion - Exclusive games are Coming to an End

Developers should be able to maximize their profits with every platform. There are great games being made that simply do not sell because they debute on a low selling sytem (example, bayonetta 2). Because of this. sequals are not being made even if the game deserves it. It's only a matter of time before the invisible hand of economics brings games to every system possible.

We already saw a huge shift in games in generation seven. Playstation exclsives such as Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy expanded to other systems in hopes of maximizing profits.

There are some franchises that are still selling geatly, like Pokemon, that will adapt in this new market more slowly. Even with pokemon we are starting to see spinoffs on tablets (pokemon trading card game).

If developers wish to use their resources more effeciently it would make more sense to make little changes to one game and release on all systems rather than to make entire new games per system. This is the way of the future.

Microsoft Recognizes this by allowing cross play games and apps from Xbox One to PC. In the future, we will start to see this with every platform. I think a trend we will see is free to play console games like Fable Legends to start occuring.

What does this new market mean? It means developers can create games quicker, profit more, and produce games for a cheap price.

No not really.

Metal gear and Final Fantasy went multiplat... well because MS paid. But I got your point

The more the PS4 dominates the more exclusives it will get, especially from Japan.

FF16 could be exclusive if 15 bombs on Xbone and with a bit of negotiating from Sony.

With all this cross-gen cross-platforming cross-connection thing going on, I don't doubt it.

Japan seems to disagree.

PC+XB
PC+PS

The future.

But there will always be console exclusives.  And there will always be exclusives as well

There are good games that don't sell for all kinds of reasons, whether they are on one low selling system, an high selling system, or all of them. Some great games didn't sell well on the PS2. Size of user base is just one factor among many.

Nope.

Third party exclusives have been a rarity since last gen, third parties have very little to gain from exclusivity so this transition was natural. In the past it was more frequent as hardware was radically different I mean just compare the pS1 vs N64. During the PS2 era we saw one system dominate so strongly developers really weren't bothered and the hardware difference were still quite big.

When talking 1st party exclusives they are still one of the most crucial differentiators between systems and the people funding them (microsoft, sony and nintendo) have every reason to keep them exclusive. That trade off in software sales is necessary to protect future growth of their platform and all of the revenue that comes with it including third party license fee's.

As kowenecki pointed out, your prediction will come into place when Sony, MS and Nintendo are no longer interested in selling their own hardware, thats something thats about a decade off.
