That is an interesting question. An indie game for me has to be a small studio which isn't well known and has independant funding. Though, not sure how accurate that is.

Any title launching on a console that fans of the other consoles say doesn't count or is worthless.
OT: Seriously though it's difficult. Minecraft was an indie game... I didn't consider it that once it sold a bajillion copies though. It's really a combination of the budget behind it and the size of the team that's working on it.
Not really that hard to define:
An indie game is a game which is not released in retail.
Stike that... This is harder than I ever imagened.
For me: games that arent't funded by a publisher.
But yeah, it's almost like "hardcore"...
If the studio is independent and the games are "small", its what I call an indie game

Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty is an indie game? I never knew!

A game made by a small studio.
"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

I dunno. Dual Destinies is hardly indie.

Something cheaply made by someone with a mustache and a fedora but doesn't count as an exclusive because it's ostensibly a piece of art, not a game.
