2015: Apple, Samsung, HTC, Chinese phones all have the power button on the side.

But the power button on the Xperia Z had an odd shape.
More phones are waterproof now though and that was a feature which made the Xperia Z popular.

It is a natural result, as smartphones are getting bigger. The power button would be out of reach if it was on top nowadays.
The Chinese companies do seem to copy Sony smartphones Omni-balaned premium design.
