Forums - Sales Discussion - NPD Aus: PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console of 2014 and 60% LTD marketshare

The PlayStation 4 is Australia's favourite video game console.

PlayStation Australia today announced that PlayStation 4 was the number one selling home console last year, while also becoming the fastest selling home console in Australian history.

The console has a 60 percent market value share, and was a major contributor to a 47 percent growth in retail sales for interactive home entertainment.

Further to that, the PS4 was the number one console for third-party titles, outselling other major console platforms across each of the top 20 biggest selling titles of 2014, including Watch Dogs, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Destiny and Far Cry 4.

“The PlayStation brand is exciting, innovative and entertaining and it’s been a busy year! We are excited and overwhelmed by the response of Australian gamers to the introduction of PlayStation 4,” said Michael Ephraim, Managing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia. “This year, we plan to push the boundaries of play further: with bigger, more immersive gaming experiences with titles such as Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End; new digital entertainment services coming to Australia and truly ground breaking technologies in development with Project Morpheus.”

They can shoot for more this year. WiiU will be a non-factor unfortunately (I own one) till the holidays and Zelda and even that doesn't have the selling power of their 2 big hitters last year. MS will have another fine holiday but Sony is bringing exclusives in the first half of the year. The only thing that could keep it below 60% this year is if they don't cut price by November and MS cuts to $300. WiiU hopefully will get a cut to $250 and PS4 costs have gone down enough that they could probably cut right now to $350 and make profit but won't until at least September. Now if they cut to $300 this year (they've liked $100 cuts in previous gens early on) then well...we would see craziness. I'm thinking this is a 20m year for PS4.
