Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii U at Best Buy - not looking great

This reminds me of when I went to a Best Buy (I live in Philly, so big area) to get Mario Kart 8. They didn't have any on the shelf, so I ended having to ask an associate in the gaming department if they had any. He said he'd check, but not before asking me what system it was for. Asking me what system MARIO Kart 8 was on. I'd understand if his first guess was 3DS, or even Wii or DS, but his first guess? XBOX. I was so close to walking out.

Was that guy living under a rock for the last 30 years not to having heard anything at all about MARIO?

Don't know what he looked like, but in my mind it's already set to the Sandbag of the Home Run Contest from Smash Bros for Wii U. Coming out on Wii U btw, if he couldn't manage to find that one out *shakes head*

Retail presence in gaming is important and the decline of the Nintendo shelf space is alarming. During the Wii/DS era, you would have entire isles devoted to each, they would have their own end caps, be featured in front of the store for big releases, etc. Now, even with the 3DS being available 3+ years and the Wii U for almost two, on average, in the stores I frequent, shelf space is all combined (Wii, Wii U, DS and 3DS) or the total space is just one isle.

The Nintendo family of products no longer offer the same value proposition to retailers from say 2006-2011. With the Wii and DS retailers were able to push accessories which have very high retail markups, thus high margins for them.

Xbox for the most part has remained the same since 2005, commanding a lot of space with the X360 still and growing for Xbox one, the same with the PS3 and PS4. Most of the Vita space I have seen is coupled at the ends of PS3 isles and is a drastic reduction from the height of the PSP days, but the Vita is not selling well and (the console itself) is never stocked well.

This looks like a bad best buy. Janesville, WI is similar and when I asked they guy, he actually told me that they sell quite a bit of Wii U, but they tend to stock up on it the next town across instead. Weird. One store doesn't make a precedent or is in no way important. Sales figures are decent right now, so facts are still facts.

I went to my local Best Buy 2 weeks ago and I don't even remember seeing a Wii U section!

Won bet with t3mporary_126 - I correctly predicted that the Wii U's LTD at the end of 2014 would be closer to 9 million than 10 million. http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=6673287

Well obviously they're marking a lot of old software on clearance to pave the way for Amiibo.

Looks a bunch of other great WiiU games are sold out!

Epic win.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

i didn't want to be the first person to say but now that you did,.. omg i know.  these blues just completely clash with each other.

it's like my mother always said,. when you ask a girl to the danse you match your tie to her dress.  it's just polite.

I noticed similar things at my local Best Buy, but it wasn't nearly as empty. I just know they must have gotten burned by a lot of those "mature" launch window titles. They bought in for a lot copies of ACIII/ ZombiU/ Arkham City, etc and they're still sitting on them from 2012. That's a lot of inventory to sit on. My Best Buy has multiple shelves six/seven deep of copies of all those titles. If you haven't noticed, a lot of other retailers are being really selective nowadays with what games to even carry, let alone how many copies to buy in the initial shipment. My WalMart only got in 4 copies of Hyrule Warriors for launch week.

And I'm not just talking about Nintendo games, obviously. But Wii U third-party launch window titles are a good example of a lot of people betting on the wrong horse.

My thoughts exactly. I spent the car ride home and the next hour or so at home complaining about it to everyone I know. It's just.... It's freaking MARIO.

Because one store represents every store. My local best buy it's as stocked as the other systems. Try again and troll elsewhere

Is 6 out of 10 stores near me showing no MK8 in store trolling, or is making unbacked claims about your local store better?

SM3DW & Pikmin 3 are worse.  The closest store that has SM3DW is 30 miles away, and the closest with Pikmin 3 is 45 miles away, and they have no option to ship to a closer store.

You know Best Buy isn't the only store that sells video games in existence right? All of the Gamestops and Walmarts I've visited in the last few months have a healthy stock of Wii U games: including Pikmin 3, SM3DW, Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze, and Mario Kart 8. I always see 3-4 copies at the Walmart I work at. And my area while a metropolitan area (Pittsburgh) still wouldn't rate high on the list of population density in the U.S.
