So you say Sony uses glossy finishes (let's take Lafiel's 16%) for solving heat issues?

Not to 'solve heat issues', but to aid heat dissapation - the only glossy external surface is the hdd bay cover.

That isn't to say it would break if it were also matte, but the overall temperatures would be higher, which can reduce the lifespan of mechanical hdd's, and hey, if you can reduce the chances of a problem from happening with such a minor change, why not?

Get someone to take their cover off and take a picture for you, or pull off the cover of a friends, you'll see vertical lines passing down the inner side surface, that's because in the plastic itself, there are small hollow channels intended to aid the even dissapation of heat.

This is totally new to me and interesting. Can you give actual numbers by how much a glossy design helps instead of a matte finish? That said I think that glossy is also a design decision of "look" and not aid heat dissipation. It may be a side effect but it is also taken as a "premium" look, for sure.

There's no solid percentages/stats for heat dissapation that I can give you because before I even attempt to take into account the channeling, i'd need to know the plastic composition, pellet agent and the injection pressure/ballance data from the injection molding hardware for a clear figure.

The thickness of the material makes a difference too, as does the distance and volume of the 'air box' between the heat source and surface.

As a general one-answer-fits-all though, you want a semi-matte surface on the interior and a gloss surface on the exterior, which will net you a %12-22 reduction overall in maximum operating temperature over a matte surface.

I agree that theres obviously a stylistic approach to it too, but the semi-matte interior and attention to physical design for heat dissapation suggestions that they were actively thinking about heat transferance while working on the visual design.
