Forums - Sony Discussion - Some questions about the PSP / Vita

Hello everyone!

I was thinking about buying a PSP yesterday, because i saw it for really low prices on ebay (~50€ with games).

After a bit of research i found out that the PS Vita seems to be able to play PSP games that i downloaded from the Playstation Store.(https://support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3779/~/playing-psp-games-on-ps-vita)

The PS Vita is a bit more expensive on ebay (~100€), but i guess that would be the better choice because of the bigger library (PS Vita + PSP games).

So my questions about this are the following:

1. Can i still buy all PSP games on the Playstation Store or are there games that arent on there (also the prices would be great!)?

2. Can i import games and play them on the vita or are there any region locks?

3. Any game recommendations? I mainly plan on buying RPGs, but there are probably a lot more good games than that!

4. I own a PS3, so Remote Play will be a thing i will use. I've read that not all games work with remote play so i looked up a list of games that would work.

It seems like only a hand full of games work and none of those that i'd play are on there. Am i missing something or are these really the only games that work  with Remote Play?

5. Are there any hidden costs? I know that i have to buy a memory card, but maybe there is more!?

6. Last question isnt that important, but can i record gameplay of the vita without buying a capture card or something? The 3DS unfortunately needs a expensive capture card to record gameplay, so if its possible without any additional costs that would be great!

I would be happy for some anwers and advice! I havent owned a single Sony handheld so far, so im a big noob!

Also this is my first thread so i hope you wont be too harsh!

I would recommend the PSP. Lots of hidden gems on that system.

Well... Without trying to not get u to buy a vita cause I think its a good handheld, just terribly managed by its parents. I am wondering, have u ever tried the ppsspp emulator for ur phone/pc to play psp games? Also, if you do buy a psp, u can get a microsd card adapter for like $8 (it comes with 8gb microsd card anyway) and spend another $20 and get a 32gb micro sd card for it (and do other things with it). Cause it is a cheaper option tbh

But with that being said, you will miss awesome games like Persona 4 Golden and etc so if you do buy a Vita, u will probably have fun with it. Just remember what ur in for. Oh and dont forget that digital psp games take up space on that lovely, overpriced, memory card on the vita

There are some PSP games not on the store, but most are and I'm pretty sure all of them will work on Vita. Oh and of course the old PS1 games are also really fun to play on PSP/Vita

Both the PSP and Vita are fully region free

For games, you absolutely must try Persona 4 Golden! It is awesome!

Remote play is very limited so that list is probably about right. If you get a PS4 though I believe it is much better supported.

Other than the memory card there is no hidden costs that I know of, although a PS+ subscription would be worthwhile if you don't already have one.

Thanks! :) I plan on getting a PS+ subscription, but i think it has been quite disappoing since a few months, so im not so sure yet!

As long as the most important games like monster hunter and final fantasy are on the store im happy!

If you buy a Vita you can play most PSP games through PS Store. So Vita is a better deal.

3DS, Wii, PSP, Vita, PS2, PS3, PS4 & Steam.

1. There are PSP games missing from the PS Store altogether (for example, Crisis Core) and there are PSP games which are on the store but aren't compatible with Vita (for example, Twisted Metal Head On). There's a lot of good stuff compatible but you should check first (do you have access to a PS3? You can check the PSP section of the store on there) to see if there's stuff you want.

Obviously you can't play UMD's on Vita either.

2. No region locks for Vita. Import away.

3. You'll get flooded with game recommendations, I'm sure. Tearaway; Hotline Miami; DanganRonpa; WipEout 2048; Atelier Totori & Ys Memories of Celceta are my favourite games on Vita.

4. Remote play is more a feature of PS4 -> Vita. PS3 compatibility is severely lacking, because it's not mandated like it is with PS4.

5. Other than the high memory card prices, no hidden costs that I'm aware of.

I'd always recommend getting a Vita over PSP, but there are a large number of UMD-only games that may be exactly what you're after and so I'd check compatibility first before getting either console.

Vita has a rapidly growing library so if you like JRPG's I think it'll be worth getting one eventually, but you may wish to get it down the line when it has even more games whereas PSP's library is pretty sorted now.

(I'm not a big fan of PSP though. Aside from the games, I find UMD's loud and the console flimsy. It's a big downgrade coming from Vita).

Also, consider PlayStation TV releasing in a few months. Again, it doesn't have full compatibility with all Vita games, but it's something to consider.

Ah that sucks! Crisis Core was actually one of the games i wanted to play.

The main reason i want to get the system for are JRPGs, so i guess that would be a good choice.

Sucks about the Remote play, but its not that important. Still a good thing, because i plan on buying a PS4 sometime next year!

So i can just download a Rom for the emulator and play it? Just like with a N64 emulator?
That would be awesome! I would miss out on great PS Vita games and remote play though... I really dont know what to do!
