Forums - Gaming Discussion - How long before Xbox Division is no longer integral to MS long term vision?

It's never been integral, and it'll never be integral. MS is a giant, and the Xbox division is like its toenail. Would it hurt to lose it? Sure, but it's really no big deal.

MS would carry on being a massive money maker even if they dropped it tomorrow.

I can't find the quote right now but Bill Gates said that he would support the new CEO if he decided to spin it off. Though he didn't think that would be the case because xbox is integral to their long term vision.

Edit: Here you go : http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/05/06/bill-gates-would-support-xbox-spin-off-microsoft-responds

that qoute again  all bill gates was trying say was that he supports the new ceo no matter what   he wasnt trying say that they are talking about selling it

Pls read the article again it begins Microsoft has responded to comments made by company founder Bill Gates in which he suggested he'd support the decision to spin-off the Xbox business, explaining he was just voicing his support for new CEO Satya Nadella. It then goes on to show how he feel xbox is integral culminating in the end with "Microsoft is committed to gaming across multiple platforms with Xbox as the centerpiece of our gaming strategy. We remain committed to Xbox and the millions of Xbox fans around the world."

centerpiece sounds pretty integral.

Yeah to there gaming strategy not to MS as a whole

Microsofts vision is to have a media hub in peoples homes, they haven't 180'd on that at all. This seems more like trying to put a negative spin on positive news. More consumer choice is always good, thats what microsoft did well last gen and failed to do this gen.

All these changes have more to do with change in leadership (new ceo, new head of xbox) than anything else. The outgoing leadership didn't know the market, the incoming leadership appears to, and are making the necessary changes.

They aren't losing more money. They dropped kinect which was reportedly almost as expensive to make as the console. They are now selling a less powerful console than the ps4 for the same price. So if anything, their profit margins should be bigger than before.

Also, it has never been integral to their vision. If it was, there would never be rumors of MS getting rid of the division.

It’s also worth pointing out that Bill Gates said in the same interview: “We’re taking PC gaming, Windows gaming and Xbox gaming, and bringing those a lot closer together.” Here he is probably referring to the fact that Microsoft now uses a common Windows 8-based kernel across PC, smartphone, tablet, and game console — and if these platforms are intrinsically linked, he says a sell-off is “not as obvious as you might think.”

Given how many times they have started and restarted the games for windows thing I think it's clear they look at gaming as a part of the company as a whole. Even if it's never been spectacularly profitable for them.

Have never been really integral or necessary to them, nor is ps4 integral to sony even tough it's pretty important. Just Ninty have gaming as integral to the company in terms of platforms owner.

Now about spin-off is possible but not likely, x1 isn't doomed or a big enough liability for them to dispatch it.

I'm hearing shareholders in the background, they are asking them to sell it off. Can you hear it too?

MS hasn't said anything to really lead us to believe they're going to do that.

Maybe if MS gets desperate for money they'll consider selling some divisions.
