I'm a networker myself so I can say whatever they are doing has probably nothing to do with server maintenance. Servers are designed to run indefinitely so it's not like they have to clear out the recycle bin every few weeks.

I'm suspecting that in that time they are using the servers for other tasks not related to the PSN.

A few weeks ago or so XBL was down every time I wanted to play Titanfall...so there's that... I guess.

Maybe they are mining a few bitcoins every now and then to stop them going bankrupt? ... just a theory.

I don't think it would be that far off though. Sony is a big company with lots of branch businesses one of which is finance. There are a lot of things you could do with free capacity for such an amount of time.
