Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony to Receive 150 Million Dollars from Sale of its Square Enix Shares

Hmmm. Basic lack of accounting understanding here.

Just $47m of that is profit.

Over $100m of it is the return of their OWN original investment.

So the profit gain that will show on the accounts next FY is $47m dollars. The rest is a balance sheet swap of an investment to cash.

$47m is a welcome windfall, but kinda tiny in the grand scheme of things for a company of this size.

Literally, what I came here to post. Not sure how much this will help. Hopefully, it actually does something long term (and not backfire if SE suddenly starts doing great) or Sony will be inevitably doomed and regret this decision.

Um.....everyone since E3 2013? lol its doing great on its own steam, but we aren't blind to market conditions.

but some of us  love posting reminders all the time,i'm just getting the hang of it

360 sold almost 20m more in usa and now new xbox is level pegging, just a nice side bonus not that it was intended from new Xbox launch,of course

Not as bad as PS2 vs Xbox sold in US compared to 360 vs PS3. Again, market conditions.

that's what happens when you win console wars world wide you get massive winning margins kind of unavoidable ,nintendo & sony know this ,maybe 4th time lucky for xbox as they progressing each gen and i'm guessing sony massive debt would have finished them off by gen 9

I smell like the dark forest of Dwemereth in the morning mist                                                   fanboy til i'm bankrupt

Thanks for making sense of these types of things, kowen.

How many shares did they have? (If it's in the article, I didn't read it. Who clicks on links?!)

Excellent. SE is no longer exclusive to Playstation anyway, so this is nice.

Can't comment without trolling?

What they said was perfectly accurate, however.

47M in the plus is not bad news when your company is bleeding money. It's steps like this that will make them post big profits in a couple of years. It's the plan at least.

Love how you try to put words in others mouths and then carry on as if it's a real argument! No one said this would save them or make them profit as much as Apple or some such thing. I merely pointed out that they profited and that's good enough for a company in their position. You can't begin to be profitable if you're losing money left and right. So this is a good move.

Look at the bolded, italicized, underlined part. Don't be so defensive.

I hope with this kind of news SquareEnix pull them self together and start making more unique stories and original characters like the old days.

They are industry figures.  Not mine.  it shows that they made a loss on avearge on all the spiderman movies at the cinema.  The profit later from Bluray sales/dvd etc is unknown.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider-Man_%282002_film%29

"Spider-Man was a major commercial success"

"Spider-Man became the highest-grossing superhero film of all time at the time of its release. It was eventually outgrossed in 2007 by Spider-Man 3."

"The film's U.S. television rights (Fox, TBS/TNT) were sold for $60 million. Related gross toy sales were $109 million. Its U.S. DVD revenue as of July 2004 stands at $338.8 million. Its U.S. VHS revenue as of July 2004 is $89.2 million."

And that are only the US numbers up to 2004, they sold the television rights in many other countries and sold DVDs, Blu-rays and even VHS-tapes in many other countries and several Blu-ray-versions in the US.

Thanks.  Just shows how important correct merchandising of the movies, post cinema, is crucial.

True words. These days, it is a major, major source of profit. The cinematic release attempts to pay off the production and marketing, maybe make some profit, and build a fan base, and everything else is where they really rake in the bucks.
