im sorry but this is a very dumb question, here are the sales for mainline console platformer Donkey Kong games.

Wii U isn't a mainline console.

Funny, but the last line of his post remains unchallenged.

You have to consider that it IS one of nintendo's worst selling consoles aside from virtual boy ...

I did. But I've been convinced in another, earlier thread that install base doesn't actually matter when comparing sales. Not nearly as much as art style or other arbitrary stuff.

That's sarcasm. The logic oft employed on these forums has turned my bitter.

It's true that install base does not matter when you have the BEST QUALITY game but retro is known for good games and not something the public would consider as amazing but if the WII U had Halo 5 as an exclusive, I bet it would have moved atleast 3 million WII Us. Retro studios best game so far has sold around 6 million.

It is GOOD games that sustain momentum but it is the AMAZING games that move the consoles.

Does the Metroid Prime trilogy seem "just good" to you? The first one is one of the most critically acclaimed games ever.

System sellers move consoles, like Call of Duty or Pokemon, it is up to you whether those games are amazing or not.

Very few dev teams have such a flawless record as Retro. My idea of "just good" would be something like WayForward.

Game informer gave Tropical Freeze a 9.25/10 btw.

It may sound dumb to you but QUALITY is measured by SALES. While retro games do good sales wise it's just that they fall short of amazing.

Well, I believe Donkey Kong TP will sell over a million units before this year ends.
It must be the most underrated franchise in selling power.
The worst selling Donkey Kong game sold over 3 million units on Super Nintendo even though it was released in 1996 after the N64.

Even the games in which you had to use drums as controllers sold over 1 million. And it sells well in America, Europe and Japan.

We will finally get a chance to see if it is just bought by Nintendo fans who bought the console for others games, or if it moves systems by itself. (it was a system seller in the 90s, it gave the SNES the edge over Genesis in the USA)

Pikmin 3 sold over a million copies so it would be pretty weird for DK not to.

Edit: Read Pikmin 2's numbers as 3's, but non the less it's sold 0.7+ million. MY point still stands :P

Actually it hasn't even hit a million yet according to vgchartz ...

You also have to account for the fact that Pikmin is one of the more recent franchises compared to DK and we won't know how well DK will do on a poor selling system.

This should put everybody's qualms to rest.

I'm wondering why anyone would think DK can't move 1 Million units.

I was unaware that this thread was about DKC:TF's ability to move Wii U systems. I thought it was about it's ability to move itself, and in that sense, I think it will sell over one million copies. Mainly because I believe that it'll have long legs, like its predecessor.

Go ask yourself these questions then ...

Did mario galaxy 1 or 2 sell a massive amount of consoles or was it dependent on the existing userbase ?

Another question that you should ask yourself is did DKC:R sell consoles or did it depend on the existing userbase ?

Consider the following, the fact that the WII U doesn't have much of a userbase and the fact that almost everything is guaranteed to flop aside from MK8, SMB4, as well as a few other maybe.

The only way for the game to move itself is that it will also likely have to move the consoles as well in the WII Us current situation.

Wii U has an install base under 6 million yet has 6 games to cross the million mark. Even if Wii U somehow stopped selling any units from this point forward, Donkey Kong would likely sell over 1 million.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

Of course it will!!

Yeah sorry that was my mistake, i read Pikmin 2's numbers as 3's. I've added a edit to my original post. Still, i cant see DK selling less than a million. The WiiU isn't that doomed.

I'm not saying that it will sell under a mil, infact I very much said that it will hit a million but it will probably be one of it's weakest in the main entry.
