Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The Wii U "Five": *NEW EPISODE 9/17/15: Super Mario Maker Review!*

You asked about the yellow cat suit of Mario, that's what wiki says:

"In the Nintendo Wii U game Super Mario 3D World as a powerup. Each character has their own form representing some of the different Maneki-neko, with Mario being golden yellow, representing wealth and financial success, Toad and Luigi being blue and green respectively, representing success in academia, Princess Peach being Pink representing success in love, and Rosalina being black, warding off evil spirits. Each character can also become a statue, similar to the Tanooki Suit, which resembles the Manaki-neko."

I did look that up, actually... but...

When I thought about it, it looks more like people correlated the colors with their meaning than the other way around, lol...  The Maneki-neko catsuit stomp move turning into a golden statue makes the most obvious sense, while the colors of the catsuits doesn't quite add up.  Success in academics?  You really think they were thinking about that 30 years ago when they made Luigi green?

But I think it can explain why Mario is yellow, he's supposed the be Nintendo's money maker, lol.

And it makes sense why Rosalina is black.

Yeah, I think Toad, Luigi and Peach accidentally had colors with meanings.

They also taalked a little about it in "Iwata Asks": http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/wiiu/super-mario-3d-world/0/1

That also talks about the proper maneki-neko statue that ALL of the characters turn into when used.  I think that's where the cultural reference is, and people are mixing it up, because Luigi/Peach/Toad all turn into the golden statue pose as well.  I think the default colors are where the oddness is, and also...

Red represents good health/vitality, so a red catsuit for Mario makes even more sense than yellow!
