Microsoft Plans Blu-ray Xbox 360, Due in May?

Rumours were circulating today (Monday, 18/02/2008) that Microsoft is set to dump HD DVD and bring out a Blu-ray Xbox 360 by as early as May 2008. The move will allow Microsoft to go head-to-head with the Sony PS3 gaming console which has been credited with being one of the main reasons that retailers have preferred Blu-ray over Toshiba’s HD DVD.

David Richards reports that insiders at Microsoft in the USA has told SmartHouse that Microsoft have already configured a standalone Blu-ray player that can be connected into an Xbox 360, which could be on sale within three months.

yeah, because HD-DVD add-on did WONDER for Xbox360. ;)

frankly, this will just be used by Sony fans as a way to say "Okay, if you add all this in, PS3 is a much better value"

Seriously, you either have it built-in or you don't, nobody is going to fork over 200 dollars for a add-on with no HDMI port.

Soriku (Feb 10/08): In 5 years the PS3/360 will be dead.

That is the shortage problem!!

MS made a hell load of X360's with HD DVD player build in side but then Toshiba announced they will not support HD DVD anymore at the beginning of January and MS had to remade them => That leads to shortages!

Konnichiwa you are brilliant =p.

Without taking advantage of it as a gaming media disc (which they can't because they would alienate their current install base) I don't see the point. Lost Odyssey would definitely be nicer on one disc instead of the four it came on...and it was packaged cheaply...the disc are just piled on top of one another! Not separated!

This doesnt seem feasable. Assuming that 360 charges 150 fro the add on its still 500 bucks for a Blu XBOX. I dont think its worth it as Blu may never be a big format, and if it is it wont happen till a XBOX 720 is ready to go.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

They've got to do this if they don't want the 360 lose sells.

I've got the touch!!

An add-on worth more then the 360 iteself? Lol.

doubtful (to the subject line).

More likely, MS will silently support HD until they announce their new system (summer 09/summer 2010). The new system will have a built in blu ray player.

Who gives....

I WANT A VHS ADD ON!!!!!!

Hi i'm new
Prediction:
EA will buy as many Companies they can,so they can make a super Console that
will have the most exclusive games, and Will win the next GEN

In my mind, Microsoft will only release one if there is a massive demand for one... and from the looks of it atm, there isnt... I dont see many 360 owners wanting a Blu Ray addon too badly tbh. Also, Microsoft is trying to promote downloads.
