My sons are ultra-mellow about X-Mas, it's almost a chore to get them to think of things they want as gifts. I was the same way as a kid (still am) and at 13 I told my parents that they didn't have to get me anything anymore. The only reason they are getting it for X-Mas and don't have it already is because of my wife, she made a big deal about having a big gift to give them.  I don't really know if this satisfies your "WTF" but basically it's just how we roll, besides they are getting several gifts that they don't know about.

You dont really have to use kinect for the most part so you can go ahead and dload the games and update.

The thing is, Kinect will need to be re-calibrated once you plug it in for christmas because if you move it messes with it a little bit.

If you are going to get them Peggle 2, or any other game digitally. I would go ahead and download or install them too along with the big update. Ryse just got a big patch the other day.

Like toadslayer72 said. The recalibration - both visual and audio, will just take a few minutes at best. (But is important - do not skip. I couldn't play Sports Rivals till I calibrated.)

Unlike with the Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE, you'll want to get them setup with their own Xbox LIVE Gamertag if they don't already have them.

The upside, while you don't need to sign in for them to play the games you purchase and install on the console.  The downside, is if they don't already have gamertags, you'll need to get them setup with those.  If not already done, you may want to wait to set those up so that they can pick/choose their gamertags.
