Forums - Gaming Discussion - PS4 vs. Xbox One Demand (An Anecdotal Story)

So in case any of you don't know, I work at Best Buy and yesterday we FINALLY got a shipment of PS4's! This was the first time since launch that we actually got a shipment. Technically we got the shipment around Thursday last week but we had to hold them because they were going to be in this weeks ad. However, not only did we get PS4's but we also recieved some Xbox One's as well! This was the second time we got more in; the last was when had a small shipment for Black Friday.

Ok so now that we got that out of the way I'll break up each story into segments for each console starting with their launch to their latest shipment.

LAUNCH

  • PS4- For the launch of the PS4 my store recieved around 130 consoles, about 100 of those being pre-ordered. At around 4pm on the 14th when I came in to work, there was a line 8 people long waiting for midnight, by about 9pm when we closed the line was around 25 people long. Some had pre-orders but for those who didn't we handed them tickets to guarantee they would get a PS4 (about 15 tickets were handed out). At 10pm we opened our doors to the people who pre-ordered and began ringing them out. The initial rush was about 25 people  but throughout the next hour we had sold around 60. Then at 11pm we let the people with tickets in and at that time out of the ~30 tickets we had 20 of them were taken. By the time we were done ALL of the ticketed PS4's were sold and we about 30 PS4's left from preorders but they were either picked up the next day or throughout the week.

  • Xbox One- Now for the Xbox One's launch we got about 120 consoles, ~80 of which were pre-orders. When I came to work at 5pm there were 2 people in line outside waiting. By 9pm when we closed there were round 7 people. When we opened our doors for the people who preorder we had maybe 5 people come in. Throughout the next hour people trickled in here and there and at 11pm we had sold around 25. When we opened up for the people with tickets there was a small rush of about 12 people but then weirdly enough at around 11:30 we had a big rush of people with pre-orders  and by the time we left we had sold around 65 consoles but we still had about 15 ticketed console left over. The "next" day we sold about 20 of the pre-ordered console and it took nearly all day to sell those 15 left over consoles. For pre-orders that were never picked up we sold all of them the following sunday.

Black Friday

  • Xbox One- For BF we only got XBO's in, no PS4's. We honestly didn't have alot, maybe about 20 consoles. Stupidly enough we had to hold those for midnight for a "mystery midnight" promotion so when we opened at 6pm Thursday we had to tell people to come back at midnight. Needless to say very few came back. At midnight we had at the most 5 people pick up an XBO and by 12:30 when I left no others had been sold. When I came back at 9am the still had 12 consoles left and it took us untill an about 5pm to sell those remaining consoles.

2nd Shipment

  • PS4- For our second shipment we got ~80 consoles. When we opened at 10am I was told there as line of about 30 people, most wanting a PS4. When I finally came in around 1pm we had about 20 PS4's left and by 6pm we were sold out.

  • Xbox One- For our second shipment we only got ~35 XBO's. When we open of the 30 people in line maybe 4 wanted an XBO. When I came in later we had about an equal number of PS4's and XBO's. When I left the store at 10pm we still had ~13 left (and currently do).

So as you can see the demand for PS4's is much MUCH greater than for the Xbox One, at least at my store. I honesty found this surprising since before the launch of the next gen systems my store's customers were heavily biased towards the 360. Also you know those Epic Bundles that everyone (especially on NeoGaf) thought was stupid and no one would buy? Well nearly %25 of the consoles we sold were Epic Bundles so it goes to show how much people on gaming forums know about the average consumer lol.

*Sorry if theres any typo's, i'm typing this at 4am*

That's crazy, at this rate I won't get a ps4 until next year, I really hope Sony supplies more or I might have to get Xbox one

Enjoyed reading it. I expect around 500k new consoles for NA in second shipment.

As i expected... Ps4 is breaking sales records.

Sony deserve it, they did such a great job with Ps3.

Xbox One doomed confirmed for the 1000000 times. How many anecdotal treads do we need?

I hope that they will be able to keep up with demand, or some people will just get another console instead.

Did we read the same thread? He wasn't predicting Xbox doom, he was just sharing his experience with console sales.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Was a good anecdotal analysis on demand :)

Glad I'm not getting PS4 until MGS:GZ launches sometime next year, hopefully more supply is available then. The launch games are total crap, imo.

They won't be breaking records if they don't ship enough consoles. If they are only shipping 1 million units this December it will actually be a fairly low selling month, for a December.

Anyway, interesting anecdote. It will be interesting to see what comes out of NPD for Nov and Dec.
