Forums - Gaming - Review Embargo - Anger

A couple of days ago, rumours started flying around - mainly from Sessler and Gies and some others that something was happening that they were not happy about.... Well as it's winding me up that these journalists cant help but spread FUD - "I cant say what it is, but I'm angry"... internet starts guessing, making up random stuff (XboxOne is being delayed, PS4 is melting).. so...

... I decided to take all the tweets Ive seen and come up with what I feel is a reasonable conclusion... based on their industry, how they make money, and its all about the "Hits" and income they get from their videos etc... they get money from getting their stuff on the web early.

So I'm not doubting rumours about 720p etc, but what they have been discussing is nothing to do with this.. it's got to do with them making money... people get angry when they cannot do what *they* want.

Before I suggest what I think is happening, lets just take a look at some tweets/rumours

  • On Friday Sony sent out a invitation to a *review* event in the USA (2 day event)...
  • Rumours about MS not being ready with some 3rd party games
  • Rumours suggesting there was an embargo on Xbox game reviews
  • 1st Day patches for Both XboxOne and PS4
  • Rumours suggesting that some people have yet to see a retail PS4 unit (upsetting some reviewers)
  • Some people like Adam Sessler and other "Journalists" complaining bitterly about not being able to do their job

This leads me to conclude the following:

I suspect that both consoles are trying to get ready for launch and Sony have decided to do a 2 day review at a location of their choice, while MS are struggling and are trying to get the patch in place (DRM removal hassl).

It seems to me, Sony may not have sent out many consoles to many reviewers or are not releasing the day 1 patch early so they can play/record and have instead for the moment decided to get all journalists to USA for a 2 day review event (or they have to wait until launch day like every one else). Obviously Sony want to control the flow of information - especially as reviews are going to be first on their platform. Why not do it in a positive situation.

If you think logically, these "Journalists" are more like "Youtube" celebrities and not real journalists.. they make money from making videos and courting contraversy or being "first" with their opinion. They are most likely upset that they cannot release videos earlier than what Sony/MS want and in turn their "First message" will be along with everyone elses comments on launch day.

Thoughts?

Around the Network

Mostly agree, the internet is full of people(Journalists?) that have their own agenda.

It is near the end of the end....

Yeah, unfortunately some of them seem to have their entitlement levels raised at the moment.

I don't know. It's awfully hard to draw a conclusion. That "2 day review event" thing doesn't sound that great, though, not if they expect full reviews from that. I can understand reviewers not being happy with that--though, at the same time, who really cares about the early reviews besides the reviewers? Most of the people who made their pre-orders are going to stick with them and pretty much everyone else will have to wait, anyway.

In that context, yeah, it's a storm in a teacup. The world won't end if the full reviews come after launch.

It's entitlement.

As a gamer, if someone said to me, fly over hear and review a game, you know i would be able to disconnect myself from that trip and just play/enjoy the game. I get the impression that some reviewers these days don't play games for more than a few hours. It's actually a bit of a joke when you see a review thats a few paragraphs and the information is partly incorrect... and I've seen a few of them. But two games to say review Killzone/Knack and some others.. easy.. even if you just do a preview.

Of course who wouldnt prefer to play them in their own environment.. of course, but are they saying they cannot do their job because they are somewhere else. When we know quite well this is not unusual in the industry. Now perhaps one or two of them havent been invited to the Sony event, and so they are upset by that. "it's me livelihood"..

As you say, people who ordered are likely not to change their orders at this point, so whats the deal, its that the early videos that people put up gets the most clicks and makes the most money. Unfortunately many are not doing it for us... they are doing it to be first with their "Opinions".

At the end of the day, once we are past the launch, they will be able to get their own consoles and get preview games as before, so its no big deal.

Of course this is all speculation, but considering the tweets from people, it all sounds rather true.
