Microsoft on Xbox One Vertical Orientation: 'Do it at your own risk'

Microsoft told GameSpot today that the Xbox One won't support vertical orientation due to the inclusion of a slot loading drive.

The Xbox One won't support vertical orientation, and could damage the console, according to Albert Panello, senior director of product management and planning at Xbox.

Panello revealed to GameSpot at the Tokyo Game Show, "We don't support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk." He clarified that "it wouldn't be a cooling problem, we just didn't design the drive for vertical. Because it's a slot loading drive, we just didn't design it for both".

The Xbox One isn't the only system to feature a slot loading drive; both the PlayStation 3--original and slim models--and PlayStation 4 have a similar design, and users are free to orient those consoles horizontally or vertically without risking damage to the console.

Panello stated that Microsoft discovered that "we found, interestingly enough, that 80 percent of people, believe it or not, have their Xbox [360] horizontally".

The Xbox One is scheduled for launch in North America, most European markets, Australia, and New Zealand on November 22 this year, with follow-up releases in Japan and the remaining European markets in 2014.

It has a hard-drive so I will use it like MS intended when I buy Xbone, just like I did with every computer I had and have.

How did they find out that 80% of people have their Xbox 360 horizontally?

I will be getting ps4 next year. When I get it I will replace the HDD with SSD. I wish xbox one also had this option.

Perhaps they will some day offer a version with an ssd. But still, I *never* used a console vertically. Consoles have to fit in my hifi-rack.

Possibly as simple as the 360s reported it, they do have a mercury switch in them so they know whichway there orientated, so they can fix up the green circle player lights around the power button. 

With less of the system being on the surface, wouldn't you get better ventilation? Also, for the Drives in the system, we've had Blu-Ray for 7+ years now (other optical drives for much longer) I think getting discs to read while vertical shouldn't be a problem, unless they did a poor job constructing them. Hard Drives shouldn't even matter, since they're basically Laptop HDDs, which are made for any kind of awkward orientation. They also have sensors for determining any shocks which will prevent the head from crashing into the disks by parking them.
Perhaps they mean there would be more wear on the laser reading the discs, that's the only thing I see.

No big deal. Looks better horizontal anyways.
