Forums - Gaming Discussion - Next Gen (PS4/XOne) vs Last Gen (PS3/360) overall hardware performance

So does anyone have an accurate total performance of PS3? I'd like to be able to make comparisons to last gen. I definitely did not think that the PS3 had a 100% performance advantage over the 360.

It will be interesting to see if the on paper performance gap this gen is actually less than previous gens, or if it will be about the same. Also interesting to see if that reflects on real world performance or not. Since the PS4 and Xbox One have more standard PC architecture, that will mean less time getting familiarized with the technology, and less of a learning curve in the case of the PS3/Cell.

So a smaller gap in theoretical performance may equal the same real world gap as last gen. Or it may be a bit more or a bit less.

Well the problem is every gen except this new one, the console specs have been very different than each other and full of positives and negatives. Like PS3 had a better CPU than 360, but 360 had the better GPU. It really took real world tests to see which made better looking games.

This gen the closest thing we had to an unknown was XBONE vs PS4 ram. Back before February we thought PS4 only had 4GB of GDDR5 while XBONE had 8GB of DDR3 plus 32MB of esram. One had more ram, the other had better bandwidth ram. Most of us thought the PS4 solution was better for games, but it was still something that greatly depended on what developers actually ended up doing with the hardware.

Now that Sony bumped the RAM to 8GB, it's cut and dry that the PS4 has better ram. In fact all components in the XBONE are either the same or better in the PS4. This means it's literally as easy as just comparing the numbers, unlike every other gen.

The two exceptions to this are the XBONE CPU and the XBONE audio chip. The PS4 CPU is clocked slower and the audio chip is less powerful(not worse audio, but it needs help from the cpu). This could make a similar situation to last gen where one system has a better CPU and the other a better GPU making comparisons a lot harder, but luckily for us the CPUs are still very close in performance compared to the rest of the systems.

TLDR: Can't use previous gen stuff to compare next gen hardware.

I doubt there's any actual total performance numbers...it comes down to how good devs where at squeezing Xenos and its pretty inefficient VLIW5 GPU on one side vs squeezing extra performance out of more complex set of G70 and "THE Cell" on the other side.

Also there are statements that PS4:PS3 is 10x, and XOne:X360 is 8x, so given that (on paper, and in real life tests of comparable GPUs) PS4:XOne is around 1.5 on average, it turns out that PS3:360 is around 1.2, on average...if those statements are actually true.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see the difference.

yeah i was also confused with those specs from last gen has me asking how can we believe todays numbers for both xb1 and ps4

last gen it was clearly 360>PS3 for the majority of 3rd partys as can be seen on LOT and digital foundry among other sites, and 1st partys varys depending on who you ask lol you want the truth look at and play the games for your self imo there pretty close but KZ and GOW have a distinct edge on anything on 360 but there lacking in other areas openness and a free moving camera

once the first batch of games release this fall for xb1 and ps4 watch dogs BF4 COD NFS ect im pretty sure therell be plenty of face offs then we'll get a better picture on things if theres a console with a clear disadvantage with those games this fall then i believe this disadvantage will remaining for the rest of the gen

i think more or about the same weve been seeing the 8gb of ram suprised most all, i and most were expecting 2-4gb

ps1 2mb n64 4mb

ps2 about 36mb ram xb1 64mb

ps3 360 had 512mb

ps4 XB1 8GB

the reason why last gen was a bigger jump was b/c of the HD resolutions play ps2 and xbox games on a SDTV rather than a HDTV and you'll see the true jump is not as big as many state

Loool, PS3 hadnt so much advantage over 360.

360 had better GPU and was easier to develop for.

Now, PS4 has great advantage over One, and is easier to develop for, the gap is much bigger.

and the gap with old gen is also bigger, you dont know because you only look visual, you need to see the game in action to see the big improvement in physic terms for example( not really the One because we didnt see any game like Infamous/Knack/Deep Down, the gap between both may be the physic, much more improved on PS4 )

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m
