Forums - Sony Discussion - Jack Tretton: “The Battle for Next Generation’s Hearts and Minds is Being Waged in the West Right Now”

ugust 21, 2013 Written by Sebastian Moss

With both the PS4 and Xbox One set to release on the same month in most of the Western world, it’s clear that this November is going to be one of the most exciting months in the history of gaming.

SCEA’s Jack Tretton told Bloomberg that the PS4 will be “far and away the biggest launch” SCE’s ever had, saying:

[To give] a sense of the pent-up demand, we announced that we have pre-sold over a million units worldwide, and that is really only a fraction of what the actual demand is, but we’re going to be out in over 30 countries by the end of the year, so that’s indicative of the fact that it’ll be far and away the biggest launch in our corporate history.

Japan, however, may not get the PS4 this year, so Bloomberg asked Tretton why that was. He replied:

Japan is to be determined, it is obviously [an] extremely important market for us, it’s the home market, but the battle for next generation’s hearts and minds is being waged in the west right now, and I think it’s a recognition by us that this is the market we want to lead with.

PS4 US lead confirmed.

Seems like Sony mean business. Another related article but more on the UK.

Expect us to push the PS4 everywhere, says Sony marketing

Sony plans on learning from the mistakes made with what was undoubtedly a poor launch marketing campaign for PlayStation Vita by ensuring that the PlayStation 4 branding is everywhere.

Sony openly admitted that it didn’t do enough to promote PlayStation Vita but now it’s planning a “comeback moment for PlayStation” and will treat it as an “epic launch” as they seek to fulfil the demand for preorders.

Speaking with Digital Spy, UK managing director Fergal Cera made the following statement when asked how Sony would market and promote the PS4.

"Demand is already high, so in a way all we need to do is continue what we've been doing, which is explain what it is, just continue to flesh out the story, and that will do a significant job.

"But it is a big and enormously important launch for us. This is a comeback moment for PlayStation - particularly in the UK, there's a huge groundswell of pre-orders towards us, so it's appropriate that we treat is an important and epic launch.

Expect us to push the PS4 everywhere, really. Expect us to be in new media, in all media, and strong at retail - expect us to cover all the bases in a comprehensive manner. We're writing the detail out, pinning that down now, and putting the final shapes on that. It will be a multi-dimensional launch appropriate to the importance of the device."

The PlayStation 4 launches in the UK and Europe on November 29, 2013. The North American release is two weeks earlier on November 15.

I love how it's being talked about like it's an actual war. I guess they want dominance again.

Xbox One, PS4 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Is that tretton or House as Batman, cause let me tell ya House would rule as Batman

Very well spoken.

I guess from Sony perspective if they view JP as locked up they sort of take it for granted and focus on NA and EU markets where they could lose or gain far more.

That said, I truly hope Japan is always relevant in the industry as hate to see them grow even more niche next generation.

They need the ps4 to succeed in order to survive. It seems they will do much better than last gen.

Well sony has to be cautious and determined. If a corporation entered the gaming industry solely to take your marketshare and build around it wouldn't you stand your ground as well? Microsoft halved sonys marketshare but they know the gamers they took are only loyal to third party and price.
