Sony Reaches Programming Deal With Viacom for Online Pay-TV Service

Preliminary Agreement Is a Boost for the Japanese Company as It Races to Secure Content Rights

Sony Corp. has reached a preliminary agreement with Viacom Inc. to carry the media company's cable channels on its planned Internet-based TV service, a person familiar with the matter said, a significant boost for the Japanese company as it races to secure content rights against technology firms vying to offer similar services.

Sony plans to stream traditional cable channels as well as on-demand content over the Internet, posing new competition for cable, satellite and phone companies which have long sold subscription TV services.

Big news and no one interested?

Well then it seems like the ps4 might as well be the true all in one box then. From the looks of this if Sony can pull it off they can let u cut the cord and leave the ps4 to be the only box u need without the hassle of dedicated cable box unlike m$' solution. And if nbc or other local channels don't want to cooperate Sony can just team with aereo on those channels :D Sony also has saying power since they produce major popular shows like breaking bad, community, wheel of fortune etc... While Sony thought into the future m$' is stuck in the past with cable boxes lol.

So do I, but there's no denying that this is a far better solution than having to pay for a cable box.

Well, there isn't much in the way of details. I know Viacom is pretty big and owns CBS but that's about all I know. Hard to be excited without knowing more.

I don't even really watch TV. I have free Showtime right now and haven't turned it on in weeks. Which reminds me, I need to cancel DirecTV as soon as my credit is up.

Sony has talked about this for two years. Glad to see a bit of progress being made. This is why I have asked over and over, what is the XBO doing to be more of a media box? Some seem stuck on that idea, but Sony has showed PS4 is just as capable if not more due to dedicated hardware for multitasking.

Hopefully they can secure MLB network, that is basically all I watch. The only two shows I watch on current TV are Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead, and they are already available.
