And based on recent trends, I expect MH4 to sell around 2.5M.

considering a mere port from the wii version sold 1.5 on a much smaller installed base than now, I'd say MH4 will easily sell 4M.

Aren't the best selling MH games ports as well? The 3DS version sold 1.9M worldwide, no idea how many of that is in Japan only.

Not quite, the best selling Monster Hunter games would be the 2nd and 3rd PSP games which are technically remix games featuring elements of the previous releases. I want to say MHP3 was original (allbeit based on the previous games) but I believe the second PSP game was a straight remix though.

Think of a port but due to system limitations or choice, they remove, rearrange and sometimes add parts of the original game, making it a different experience but essentially built on the back of the previous game that the skeleton still is visible. Sort of like with Capcom fighting games how some of their upgrades like the 'Super/Ultimate/Ultra'  editions will add characters, change how some of the previous ones perform and maybe even have brand new stages but it is still based on the original game.

The early MH PSP games basically did that with the previous PS2 console games that were previously released but with different quests and such but the same Monsters as MH2 from the PS2.
