Forums - General Discussion - Why do Sony Bros dominate the internet?

Twas my first console, the PlayStation, and I must admit, unlike other producers, the PlayStation brand has a lot of appeal.  I've seen it possess people to the point where criticism against Sony was tantamount to launching criticism against them. The internet is a perfect vehicle to express their sentiments.  I have never seen that from enthusiasts of Sega, Nintendo or Microsoft - or at least not to the same degree. I'm inclined to think if people in poorer countries had access to the internet the dominance would be massive (which is not necessarily a good thing since diversity is good for any environment). It is interesting to see how PlayStation is equally the most hated (and paradoxically) the most loved brand.

This post is gold.

What's funny is some people will probably quote this thread the next time someone makes a pro PlayStation post on an Xbox thread.

answer seems pretty obvious to me, theres just more of them than any other console fanbase, which shows in the sales (yeah yeah wii sold most this gen but preteens and grandpas rarely post on forums).

I'd say it's because Sony fans are more passionate about their games. Sony fans weren't dominant in the early days of the PS3 because they didn't have anything to defend with Sony, as they themselves felt cheated by Sony.

I suspect that is why during the DRM week MS fans weren't willing to jump to defend MS, because they didn't feel that they were being treated fairly. When given a reason to defend these companies in the form of great games and policies fans tend to feel an obligation to defend those companies.

The simple answer to why Sony fans dominate the internet is that for the majority of the generation Sony fans have felt that Sony had their best interests in mind and they felt obligated to defend them.

I think we need to do more research.

Has an xbox gamer i like to think that playstation gamers's mom was kidnapped by Kevin Butler, and to save her they have to say xbox sucks or (WIIUWIIUWIIU *ambulance sound*) everyday.I will not expand this story anymore in my lifetime.

I don't think those are the right reasons...

I had a longer write up, but in essence, it's about age. How old is the average person posting on message boards/forums? Lets say, 16-25. That's a nice meaty range.

Lets say you started playing games when you were 5. If you're 16 when did you start playing games? In about 2002 right? So what did you start playing on? a PS2. If you started playing when you were 5 and you're 18 now, then you started playing around 2000 most likely on a PS1 or two. If you're 18-23 you probably started gaming on a PS1. Any older than that, and maybe you started on a Super Nintendo.

When you start something at such a young age, you develop a fondness for it. It's not just a game machine, it was part of your childhood. Many of your most precious memories are tied up with that device. It helps develop fandom that is a bit more extreme than typical.

Microsoft has only been in the gaming industry for 13 years or so, but only as a relevant entity for about 8. So, fewer gamers have really grown up on the 360. Nintendo has been around for longer, but from the mid 90s to the DS/Wii era, they were getting trounced by Sony.

There are other factors but that, in a nutshell, is why I think there are more Sony fans on the internet. It's a matter of timing mostly. It will be interesting what happens when the Wii/DS kids grow up.

Nintendo gamers play through their old games while waiting for new ones.

Xbox users play games while discussing them through cross-game chat.

Playstation users play games while discussing them on the internet.

Or at least that is what I have been lead to believe.
