Wow...A few months ago I never though The Last of Us would get this type of reception...its absolutely insane how well ND managed to pull this game off.
Mass Effect 2 -tie- Bioshock 1
Haven't played infinite yet though
It's just that simple.
1. Mass Effect
2. Mass Effect 2
3. Uncharted 2
4. Fallout 3
5. Red Dead Redemption
The Last of Us is a great game, but to be honest, i think a lot of people that voted for it are still in that "fever" stage after playing a game, it's a great game, but if it was released a few years ago it wouldn't be voted as high as it now IMO.
my fav game of this Gen was Xenoblade, Monolith outdone themselves
For me it's easy from this generation.

I personaly know many ppl that have a PS3 and aside from their yearly sports game, they may have 4 or 5games. And what are those 4 or 5games? The big blockbusters games that been highly advertised. TLOU is included, it's so hyped and you can see adds averywhere so offcaurse those guys I'm talking about will add it to their small collection along GoW3, CoD and Battlefield. They will love TLOU and think it's the best game ever because it's the best mainstream lowest denominator game that they played among their small collection. These ppl that only have 4 or 5 mainstream games are those I was refering to as ''so called gamers''. They think they are gamers but they are not. And they are alot of them on every gaming websites. I'd go as far as to say that they are the majority. I think the majority of ''gamers'' in gaming websites are these ppl I'm talking about. I'm not pointing at anyone cause I have no idea who they are. I'm also not saying that if you voted for TLOU or UC that you are automaticaly one of these ppl cause that would be totaly wrong from my part because I can see how ''real gamers'' can fall in love with these games. What I'm saying is that both ''real'' and ''so called''(wich I think are the majority on the internet) can enjoy games like TLOU, meanwhile to totaly appreciate games like Xenoblade or Galaxy you need to be a ''real gamer''(and that does'nt mean that if you did'nt like those games that you are automaticaly not a ''real'' gamer offcaurse). Because ''so called'' gamers will usualy simply dismiss games like Xenoblade for not being mainstream enough and being to hard to complete or will dismiss games like Galaxy for being to ''childish'' or will simply play Galaxy but will not get past World3. I did'nt mean that liking these types of games makes you a not real gamer, I meant that alot of not real gamers likes these types of games and that imo they are more vocal on the internet that most ppl would think. But I understand that my post was'nt clear and I'm sorry if I offended anyone. |
sorry but I have to respectfully disagree, it's common knowledge that people who actually spend time hyping up a video game on the internet are the most dedicated no life advocates of their console who also have more games than real life friends. I highly doubt a person who only plays fifa, cod and buy their games according to the most recent ads would actually visit a gaming website on a regualr basis.
also you used word 'mainstream' repeatly and called people who only play 'mainstream' games not real gamers because they cannot appreciate 'gameplay' in a game, but:
1) Mario is THE most mainstream platformer of all time and you don't seem to have a problem with it, and from what I've seen most Mario games come with almost equal amount of hype as TLOU;
2) you used GoW and Battlefield as examples, but they actually have some of the best gameplays of their respective genre, and that is the reason why they're so popular, what about people who sink hundres of hours into Battlefield, or people who play through GoW on the hardest difficulty multiple times, do they do that for the cinematic story telling?
with that said I think you define 'mainstream' by generalising it with particular genres, like fps and action/adventure, to think a game is 'mainstream' because of its genre, or someone is not a 'real' gamer becasue he cannot appreciate video games the way you do, or you have to be a 'real gamer' to like or dislike certain games, that is just elitism, maybe not everyone is as dedicated and knowledgable about video games as you are, but your posts insinuate that you are better than 'so called gamers' becasue they only care about cinematics and you are capable of appreciating games they don't understand.
gameplay itself is also purely based on opinion and personal taste, I cannot play more than 30 minutes of any sports game before throwing it away, but that doesn't mean it has bad gameplay, I just happen to not like it, similarly, you may not like the gameplay for TLOU, but you cannot dismiss it on everyone's behalf by saying the game doesn't have anything beyond writing and voice acting, I happen to like its gameplay as much as its story and characters, in fact, I played through it 3 times within a week, I also finished every Uncharted game at least 5 times, but I cannot for the life of me get into GTA series, that's just my taste in gaming, I do not go out and tell everyone GTA is overrated and doesn't deserve the praise, because it's not true.
the bottom line is I understand where you're coming from, but I feel your posts make too many assumptions, you say majority of people on gaming websites only have 4 or 5 games, what is the basis for this statements? and you express your opinion about gameplay like actual facts by questioning what does TLOU have other than writing and acting; I've put 1000+ hours into Demon's Souls and Dark Souls and have completed some of the craziest challenges known to men, I think I know my gameplay, I love TLOU and Uncharted series for their gameplay, so do lots of other people, TLOU is a 18 hours long game with heavy focus on stealth and scavenging, I doubt a person who doesn't care about the gameplay would actually sit through endless hours of searching and sneaking just to see the story, there is a much easier alternative called youtube.
