Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo closing online services for Wii this June

Nintendo will shut down many of its Wii Channels on 28 June, including the Nintendo Channel, News Channel, Forecast Channel, Everybody Votes Channel and Mii Contest Channel and (i believe) wiiconnect24

Additionally, you'll no longer be able to send and receive messages using the Wii Message board. However, the Wii Shop Channel will stay open so you'll still be able to download WiiWare and Virtual Console games.
Ahead of the closure, Nintendo thanked its fans for their support and apologised to those who use the Channels.
"We at Nintendo sincerely thank you for your continued patronage of our company's products. We apologise to those of you currently using these services, and ask for your understanding.

"The above services will no longer be available even if they are started up from the Wii Menu. However, services other than those mentioned above, such as the Wii Shop Channel and 'Today's Accomplishments' on the Wii Message Board, will remain available."

nintendo didn't clarify which games this applies to, or whether online gameplay in popular titles like Mario Kart Wii or Super Smash Bros. Brawl would be affected (Nintendo refused to comment on this matter in response to an Ars request).
but mostly likely they wont be going down. Mario kart DS (which is older than mkwii ) servers are still up so i dont think nintendo will close all online for wii

Wii has online? Wow ... I learned something new today.

As long as the servers and shop are still up - that's all that matters

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.

stopped using those a long time ago though having the VC open is a good thing as I still have some points I need to spend on a game or two

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

I think they will do one last push with the Wii Mini in the US for $99 since it doesnt have online.

I still play CoD Reflex and Goldeneye 007 from time to time online. I hope those servers don't close anytime soon.

When you buy an online-enabled game or console, there needs to be a guaranteed minimum server time listed on the product so people can make informed choices.

I find it strange they'd end support for 100m units of hardware before the successor's sold 4m.

WiiConnect24 stay on.

I never used those services or online at all on my Wii xD. I tried once with Brawl and it worked very laggy. Most Wii game where better on local multiplayer like Kirby Return to Dreamland
