Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Major Nelson says Xbox One games will still be playable at the end of the new generation

Gaming Everything

The Xbox One requires authentication once every 24 hours. Users must connect their console to the Internet so that it can perform these checkups, and games will be rendered unplayable if it can’t be performed.

But let’s think ahead. What will happen once the Xbox One is done with and Microsoft has moved onto a new generation. What happens to your games library? Will titles still be playable?

Very fortunately, the answer appears to be yes. Major Nelson said the following when asked about this in an interview with r/games:

“I’ll just say this: We haven’t even started this generation, so it’s kind of early to talk about the end of the generation. That’s certainly something we would not do. That’s not the way the system is designed. It’s designed for flexibility. But let’s get the system out there first.”

Sounds a little to vague for my taste.

The best solution would be to grant people unlock codes to remove the need for the 24 hour check-in when Microsoft is truly done with the console.

This is the Game of Thrones

Where you either win

or you DIE

ohh wow so when a generation is ending i still get to play my games? ohh thank you all mighty microsoft for this amazing feature!!

give me a break.....

Honestly who thought they would actually do something like that in the first place? They would destroy themselves for the next generation after the X1

I bet ms would do a simple firmware update removing such restriction.

He was asked about this and answered. He didn't praise it as a feature.

bizarre-galaxy.de - My Browsergame, but sadly only in german :(

You can play as an octopus, though!

What do you expect him to say?

"Oh sorry, not only do you no longer own your games, but they will all disappear in time for next gen."

More than likely he has absolutely no idea, and 7 years later the servers could all be shut off for all we know.

Edit: Apparently, I am very poor at projecting sarcasm. OFC THEY WILL LET THEIR GAMES BE PLAYABLE AT THE END OF GEN, why the hell wouldn't they, and what's stopping them?

I was simple trying to poke fun at how hard some people are trying to make MS seem like an unreasonable and evil corporation.

Microsoft lost me as a potential customer of xbox one. I really like the controller. No gimmicks. They also showed lots of great first party games. But kinect and this online check in is the main problem. As a collector I want to own my games. I dont want to borrow them for a certain time.

i watch this interview and he certainly didn't say anything definitive. he was trying to dodge the question as it was being asked.
