Forums - Sony Discussion - The Last of Us - Misleading AI presentation at E3 2012? [reddit.com; no spoilers]

i played the game on hard, the AI acted the same way as in the E3 demo. the game played the same.

they NEVER beg for their own life after being beaten to the ground and having a gun pointed in their face.

Happened just last night in Pittsburg. They also come running to help. I tried to choke a guy from behind but he managed to get free, called for help and I had to run for cover while they tried to flank me from 2 sides. They also routinely run away to hide behind cover and keep pressing instead of the standard pop out shoot duck routine in most games.

Not everyone comes running, there seem to be definite zones in the bigger levels, they tend to stay in their own areas. And it's not perfect, they could use some grenades. it's possible to use choke points to take them out with the shotgun while they come running a couple at a time. I'm playing on normal though.

that never happened to me. but there is a reason for that, i never gave them a chance to beg. my hand was always on the trigger and i shot RIGHT AWAY. i wasnt fucking around.

if it didnt happen to him its because of that reason, he didnt give them a chance.

They do beg for their lives. They will cower away if you have a gun pointing at them. They will charge at you again after they cowered away if you're hesitating to kill them. They will sneak up on you. They will flank you.

In other words, the E3 presentation was spot on.

"Here is the issue. Let me start off by saying that the game is amazing, but after reading all of these reviews I am becoming more and more frustrated because the people giving this game a 10/10 have over looked something extremely important.

The amazing "next gen" AI that Naughty Dog have been advertising can be seen in how the enemy reacts to the rest of his friends getting killed in this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=qguDnY0C_Sg#t=721s

Another example is how human these guys act in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbLOokeC3VU

So what is my problem you might ask? This crazy human like AI is almost non existent in the actual game. The AI is virtually no different than Uncharted. The guys will just run at you with their bare fists even if you are pointing a shotgun in their face.

The enemy NEVER tries to post up in a room and ambush you, they definitely NEVER run away and hide to preserve their own life, and they NEVER beg for their own life after being beaten to the ground and having a gun pointed in their face. So I have to ask, why was this issue completely overlooked by those who reviewed the game?

The only part of the AI that I have actually seen working in action is how they freak the hell out when you take one of their guys hostage, they rarely respond to hearing you try and fire an empty weapons, and they do sometimes flank you. Nearly everything we have seen so far concerning the human AI in this game has been completely misleading. It's apparent to me now that everything we saw at E3 was completely scripted and the AI we were shown at e3 is not the same that is in the full game..

I'm sorry if this seems like an over reaction, but this awesome human like AI was a massive selling point for me and I am beyond disappointed to see that none of it ever actually existed.

I just want to make this completely clear. I'm not saying that the AI is bad or completely retarded to where it ruins the game. I'm saying that what we were presented with at E3 is not what you are going to get when you pick this game up from the store."

I think this is an interesting read and may be worth a little debate. Enjoy^^

Let's see....

The enemy NEVER tries to post up in a room and ambush you  .     Bullshit

they definitely NEVER run away and hide to preserve their own life        Bullshit

and they NEVER beg for their own life after being beaten to the ground and having a gun pointed in their face.     Bullshit

I suggest the guy who wrote this to play the game, and for the record I played on hard and then survivor, so it may have something to do with the AI being toned down for normal and easy. I doubt it, though.

And to all the people posting here taking everything said in the OP like official word and confirmed truth to revel in their own sick self-satisfaction that the game is not as great as it is (in their own minds, anyway), I say to you HA-HA. Play the freaking game if you want to really know.

I didn't want to waste a bullet so I kept on smashing his face in. Ugh what is this game doing to me. And people are complaining about the sex phone line numbers in the game...

Someone still plays through easy?

Don't know bout you but they did all of those things on my playthrough. They've ambushed me plenty of times(only happens when they know where you are apparently) And they've also hidden themselves whenever they know I have a gun and They usually yell out to their comrades that I have a gun and then hide themselves. The've also reacted when I only use melee weapons instead of guns usually yelling similar lines heard in that e3 demo. And pretty much everyone I melee'd begged for their lives when they fall down after being punched a couple of times or if I smash them with a brick but don't finish them off. I played on hard, easy and survivor and they all did those things so I don't bout your playthtough. You can see those things in youtube playthroughs.

And many times, I just let my AI companion kill the enemies. Tess is the most aggressive, I just let the enemy know where I am and when they start shooting Tess would usually go bonkers and headshot everyone while I hide. Ellie is good at getting attention or stunning enemies with bricks, she also tends to stealth kill pretty much anyone whose back is facing her, I also love how she stabs the heck out of any enemy who grabs me, clicker, runner or a human, she stabs them all.

Meant to come back to this thread to say you're quite wrong. I had many occasions where the AI acted precisely as it did at the E3 presentation.
