Yes, they release sales data every quarter for all the systems.

This is a non issue for most items. Yes there is some like X360 UK sales are completely missing on some games. T hat is not undertracking but a complete error.

Here is the thing. 99% of every game on this site is probably under or overtracked by at least a small margin. Especially if you want to consider digital sales. The thing is they are estimates of sales from retailers and should be treated as such. As far shipping, that is what companies track. VGC tracks sold. If you want to follow sold then VGC will give you good estimates. If you want to follow shipments then follow the news when companies release info, if at all.

In the end don't expect 100% accuracy.  They are only estimates.

They are not good estimates though. Read through the OP. In the past, VGC used to be much closer than they are now and they regularly did adjustments to hardware numbers based on shipments.

No, I completely agree with the OP and you about inaccurate numbers.  But I don't expect ioi to do anything about this, specially a thread created about this.  I have been on here for about7 months actively and never see ioi.  Its almost like he has abandoned this site.  In fact this weeks figures hasnt even updated.  The numbers has changed but not the overall numbers which is why i havent been able to update a couple of my threads.

The problem isn't that estimates are inaccurate; it's that we've been given multiple sources recently which allow a greater degree of accuracy than estimates and nothing has been changed as a result of them.

Case in point (and reason I'm posting in this thread): PSP in Europe.

We have it at 37,118 January-April 2013.

Nintendo's chart has it at ~ 290k January-March 2013.

They don't have to adjust it to be exact.  They should've adjusted it to be in the right ballpark by now, though.

Look at my reply to Pezus

I don't like this. VGC should contain PS2 HW data, not only in the Platforms total. I want to talk with "ioi"

Putting away any personal feelings aside, PS2 no longer needs to be tracked. PS2 is almost two generations old now and VGC always moves on to the next generation and stops tracking old consoles once the new generation has totally taken hold. Something that's happened once and is about to happen again.

Two generations old and still doing better than some recent systems (*cough* Vita...*cough* WiiU). But we know they can't track the places where PS2 is top dog so I agree! They just need to adjust the totals so people won't think DS overtook it.

As long as Sony put out official numbers for where it stands, I see no problem with updating it.

honestly this is a great and much needed thread. great job man

Thanks.  I figured there would be larger adjustments after the Nintendo charts were released, but that didn't really happen.  So, I figured they were waiting for Sony to release their shipment figures, but that's been a few days ago.

@AshKetchum

I don't mind that there is no longer PS2 data on here.  It would be different if VGC was around in 2001, but this site launched in 2005.  As long as they update the Platform Totals to reflect all the latest shipment data (discontinued consoles are listed this way, anyway), I'll be satisfied.  It would definitely stop the confusion it causes for new members.

Since this seems to be the current go-to place for errors with tracking, I'll add some of the ones I've been pushing since January to see if anything happens here (can't hurt!)

Angry Birds 3DS undertracked:

According to NPD numbers for 2012 it sold between 400k & 500k in the USA LTD.  We have it at 200k.  Undertracked by at least 200k.

Mario & Sonic 3DS undertracked:

According to NPD numbers for 2012 it sold between 200k & 300k in the USA LTD.  We have it at 126k.  Undertracked by at least 74k.

Kingdom Hearts 3DS overtracked:

According to NPD numbers for 2012 it sold between 300k & 400k in the USA LTD.  We have it at 500k.  Overtracked by at least 100k.

LEGO Star Wars 3DS overtracked:

According to NPD numbers for 2012 it sold between 300k & 400k in the USA LTD.  We have it at 420k.  Overtracked by at least 20k.

Luigi's Mansion 3DS overtracked:

According to NPD numbers for March it sold 365k up to April 6th.  We have it at 451k.  Overtracked by around 86k.

Fire Emblem 3DS overtracked:

According to NPD numbers for February it sold 117k up to March 2nd.  We have it at 163k.  Overtracked by around 46k.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 3DS undertracked:

According to NPD numbers for March it sold 145k up to April 6th.  We have it at 131k.  undertracked by around 14k.

FIFA Vita tracking :

There are two FIFA games for Vita: FIFA Soccer and FIFA 13.  All the North American sales for the title have been added to the first version, even sales that FIFA 13 made.  Italo correctly spotted it 3 months ago yet FIFA 13 sales are still being added to FIFA Soccer.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Plus tracking:

According to NPD numbers for February it sold 3k.  We have it at 0k.  Track this game please, ioi!

Dead or Alive 5 Plus tracking:

Also completely untracked in North America, though we didn't get any numbers for it in March's NPD.

God of War: Ascension undertracked:

According to NPD numbers for March it sold 633k up to April 6th.  We have it at 584k.  Undertracked by around 49k.

There's probably loads more that I could figure it, but it's 1AM and I'm tired, so maybe I'll add a few more tomorrow.

They stopped tracking it about two years ago, and tracked it very poorly before that.  From a post I found that I made in 2011, PS2 sales were 3.7 million lower than shipments from the start of 2009 to March 2011.

I believe his issue is there used to be PS2 data, both hardware and software in the weekly charts.  This was removed sometime in the last year or two.  Of course the hardware numbers were so inaccurate we didn't really lose much there.
