It's a remake of an old game, namely Fire Emblem Gaiden, the second one overall. Previous remakes didn't sell particularly well, nor did they live up to the gameplay of the modern Fire Emblem titles. The latter is probably the cause of the former. Shadow Dragon (2008) was a remake of the very first game, the Japan-only New Mystery of the Emblem (2010) was a remake of the third game which was a direct sequel to the first game. Nintendo launched back-to-back remakes of which the latter wasn't even released outside of Japan and that triggered the logic that the following Fire Emblem game could be the very last one. That's why I am grateful that the future of the series doesn't hinge on Shadows of Valentia, because that logic from about five years ago was simply messed up. Additional funny detail: Mystery of the Emblem (the SNES release) included the first Fire Emblem with updated graphics on the same cartridge. It's as if Nintendo tried to piss off Fire Emblem fans as much as possible with their release strategy; they should have released Shadow Dragon and New Mystery of the Emblem as a single package because Fire Emblem 1 and 3 were already on a single cartridge before. |
thanks for elaborating
it seems like SoV will severely underperform compared to Awakening/Fates, hopefully the Switch release will continue to see the series sell about 2 million like those two did.
