Forums - Sales Discussion - Is $500 too much?

$500 for a game system is...

OK. 66 13.31%

I will pay anything for Halo! 11 2.22%

I will pay anything for Sony! 59 11.90%

OK for launch, but it better come down quick! 97 19.56%

Too Much!! 263 53.02%

Total:496

Well 500$ is okay I guess for me but since I live in the EU(Sweden) that price will probably hit 500€ instead which means that I will say hell yes it's too much!

I don't care who makes it, $500 is too much for any kind of video game system for me. I waited for the PS3 price to drop before buying it, and I have no problem doing it again if I end up wanting a PS4.

I don't think $500 is too much. Giving inflation and the general components in these machines $500 sounds right. It isn't as expensive as people might like to complain about. The economy is improving and even during the bad times there were plenty of people dropping $500-$600 on iPads and iPhones every year to record numbers.

You can't compare an iPad/phone with a dedicated gaming device. Entirely different products which are valued entirely different by the mass market.

Short form:

Smartphone/Tablet-PC -> Important
Gaming console -> Not nearly as important

(Keep in mind this is the perception of the mass market, not my own oppinion)

Of course you will spend more money on an important device, so iPads get away with costs of 500€+ while consoles absolutely don't.

people won't pay 500 bucks for a gaming machine which can only display better graphics!

Think about it! the PS4 and NextBox won't have it easy at ANY price-point above 350.

And stop saying people buy them because they also buy phones for that price. smartphones can make so much more than a gaming machine can do.... The everyday people won't see the difference!

My personal OP: 500 is a bit too much. 400 only if its worth it, which can't be said for either of the both consoles...

I'm okay with paying 500, but I need to know whether it's worth it or not.

For 100 million lifetime sales no... but for 150 million lifetime sales it is.

Judging from the PS4's specs, and assuming that Microsoft's hardware will be similar to it (considering how similar they were in the recent generation), I can see $500 as a realistic price point for Microsoft's next console. In addition, I can also see one of the PS4 models within that price range. If the $300 subsidization option is real, it may help tremendously, because I imagine many people will gladly accept the lower price, and not really think about how much more of an investment it will be over paying the bigger intial price for the $500 version.

If these rumors are true, I do think that Sony is going to have to also explore subsidization options (perhaps with their Gakai/PSN Plus features), although I hope that Sony keeps basic online play free.

On a sort of related note, I wouldn't be surprised if PS4/Nextbox games go up in price to $69.99 (US), due to the rising costs of development.

$500 is a bit much, but it will go down in price over time.

I still have a hard time paying over $50 for a new game. They better not go up to $70 with PS4 and nextBox...

$50 for console games, $30 for handheld games (I miss those days).

Nintendo still doomed?
Feel free to add me on 3DS or Switch! (PM me if you do ^-^)

I paid 600 for a european launch PS3. I would do the same, if the PS4 promises the same. For the nextbox i wouldn't pay a 100, if the rumors are anything to go by.

It's way too much for me, not sure about everybody else.
