Forums - Nintendo Discussion - My First Impressions of the 3DS

Personally I'm very disappointed with 3DS. I haven't bought it yet, but I know I will, cause I have way too many DS games to finish and the top screen of my DSi is sadly going to die soon :( It only shows every second horizontal line and I have no idea how to fix it or if it can be fixed at all. Makes playing most games painful :/ But back to the 3DS - I find the library to be really poor. There is not a single must-have game for me. Only games that I wouldn't mind playing like Zelda, 3D and 2D Mario or Luigi's Mansion. I would probably try Fire Emblem and Kid Ikarus out, as I've heard they are good games. Still, not a single one of these games makes me wanna buy the console.

It's kinda surprising for me, cause in the previous gen there was no doubt in my mind that DS>>>PSP, but this gen it's Vita>>>>>>>3DS. I hope the console gets more interesting games (like SMT4) before I finally decide to buy it.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

You do know that you can ADJUST the VOLUME of 3D?

You need to have the Depth Slider "ALL THE WAY UP". You do know that, right?

Anyways, you should play:

Kid Icarus: Uprising

Resident Evil: Revelations ($19.99¢)

Fire Emblem: Awakening

Kingdom Hearts 3D

Star Fox 64 3D

Dillon's Rolling Western (eShop)

Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins (comes out on 3DS this month, it's the prequel)

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed 3DS

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

Mutant Mudds (eShop)

Harmo Knight (eShop)

Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure

Tales of the Abyss 3D

Liberation Maiden (eShop)

Kersploosh (eShop)

Gunman Clive ($1.99¢ eShop)

Nano Assault EX (eShop)

Spirit Camera: the Cursed Memoir

Shinobi 3DS

Also you can download plenty of free Demos

Denpa Men They came by wave, is a Dungeon Crawler RPG (there's a Demo)

You can even visit 3D Websites, like the ones I have in my signature. But gbatemp.net site needs to visited on PC to open the ZIP file, if you want 3D screenshots of other GameCube & Wii games.

There are also 3D XXX sites.

Pretty much this. 3DS is a GAME MACHINE before it's anything else. You've got a Vita already for all those functions, as well as a PC.  You didn't exactly pick up the best games to make a particularly good first impression. The games above, ESPECIALLY Fire Emblem, Kid Icarus, Rhythm Thief, and Shinobi are pretty damn awesome.

3DS easily has the best game line up of any handheld around right now.

I was planning on buying a 3DS for Paper Mario but was put off by the sticker concept tho Mario & Luigi looks promising

Just got a 3DS xl myself semi-recently, mainly for my long train commutes to the city, and I gotta say I'm pleasently surprised with how much I'm enjoying it. Coming in as a pretty big 3DS skeptic, Nintendo has so far proven me wrong for the most part. Though Mario Kart 7 is the main game I've played, and I always love the Mario Kart games, so I could just be biased there. But I also got the Tales game which I've enjoyed. While it's not as good as Symphonia or Vesperia, it's still a pretty solid RPG. Finally, I've been playing Paper Mario, which is a blast as well. Kinda feels like a watered down Mario RPG in a way, but then, Mario RPG was so phenomenal that even a watered down version still measures out to be a good game. And the 3D effects look surprisingly good in this one.

Other features are pretty bare-bones. The Netflix are browser are pretty crappy. But I had little intention to use this device for anything other than gaming anyway. Face raiders was amusing for about 10 minutes. My sister nearly fell over with laughter. Didn't even bother with the gimmicky ar cards nonsense. The E-shop is a pretty significant improvement over the harder to navigate Wii shop, but when browsing it becomes quickly notible how few software is up as of now. This is pretty puzzling when you consider the  3DS has been out for 2 years now. So Nintendo needs to pick up the pace on that front. When browsing the entire shop, there were maybe 1 or 2 games I would consider, not counting the full retail games which I'd rather just buy in physical format on Amazon, as they are generally cheaper, and allows me to sell them back if I wish.

Hardware-wise, I'm diggin it for the most part. The 3D, while not mind blowing, is pretty niffty, and I do appreciate the 3D slider. Sometimes I find myself playing closer to the screen, or my angle is slightly off, and in both cases the 3D becomes warped, so it's useful to be able to slide it off. The thumb-slider thingy, whatever you call it, feels great as well, and works especially well for a game like Mario Kart. I was concerned that the 2nd stick would be missed, by so far, between Mario Kart 7, Tales, and Paper Mario, I haven't felt I needed one yet. I suppose a game like Monster Hunter would warrant it, but I plan on getting that for Wii U when I finally invest in one of those next year anyway.

XL-specific.. Love the larger screen. Was worried the graphics would look obviously pixelated and washed out but they manage to maintain a pretty crisp look still. While I'm not too fond of the Blue color, it's better than the red alternative, and when I'm playing, it's the more slick black interior I'm looking at anyway. System feels sturdy and well made. The start and select buttons feel a bit awkwardly placed, but otherwise, I have no issues with the buttons. I'm glad I forked out the extra $30 on the XL, because I suspect I wouldn't have liked the original model as much, especially with my bigger hands.

Overall, good hardware with some great games, and I'm excited about the future of the library with games like Pokemon and Smash. And this is coming from a very big former 3DS cynic. Now Nintendo just needs to win me back on the home console front with Wii U. I'm still not there yet..

The earphone jack does 6 speaker sound, so you check out the surround sound. The speakerphone does Virtual Surround Sound.

For headphones I got "Plantronics Gamecom 777". It even converts 5.1 sound & up, into 7.1 speaker sound. I just leave the seperate microphone plug unplugged.

For eShop titles, check out the trailers for:

Dillon's Rolling Western

Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword

Ketzal's Corridors

Mutant Mudds

Pushmo

Mighty Switch Force

Colors! 3D (App)

Johnny Kung Fu

Speed X 3D

Denpa Men (demo available)

Vector Racing

Pokémon Dream Radar

Crimson Shroud

Gunman Clive (it's like Mega Man)

Liberation Maiden

Kersploosh

Nano Assault EX

Harmo Knight

You can use the search engine in the eShop. Also when in e eShop, you can type in Nintendo Show 3D, to watch the 40 different 3 minute episodes that inform you of more games and showing their actual quality (both image quality and in 3D).

And you should try "AR Games". There's at least 2 games on that card that you would Love, and they have a Sequel on the same Yellow Card for those games.

The system itself, especially the original, is unimpressive. But it's all about games. Try some Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion, Resi Revelations, and Kid Icarus and you'll see what I mean.

Vita is a way more attractive advice, but I don't remember the last time I touched it.

I think a lot of you are misinterpreting what i'm saying, the games aren't the problem. I bought those three because I knew/thought I would like them. I'm sure all the other games you guys stated are great but I don't really know if a lot of them suite me. Therefore for my first purchases I bought those 3 games, in the future I'll buy other games to try them out.

The problem is the console, it makes me not want to play anything on it. It's just boring.

That's why I like the PS2 & 3DS over the GameCube & PS Vita.

You can stream 3D 60 fps per video image trailers in the eShop.

Check out my suggestions in the eShop trailers.

Make sure to use surround sound headphones for the 6 speaker sound the earphone jack does.

And make sure to move the Depth Slider "All the Way Up"

You seem to be getting what I'm talking about and what games I like :) These two SMT games would be the first games I'd buy on 3DS. Is this LEGO game similar in gameplay to the Wii U one? Cause it looked cool. Just a couple more games like these, an original Zelda and Zelda: MM remake, redesign the console and I'll finally feel like getting it. Though I can't see it taking the place Vita has as my number 1 console.
