Forums - Sales Discussion - What will be next-gen about the next-gen?

Sony's biggest screw up this generation was costing the system too high.

So here are my predictions

New console will not start at more then $499
New console will be using Blu Ray or HD DVD disks
Wireless remotes standard
Wifi standard

... basically a simple upgrade to all 3 consoles, better speed, more ram, bigger harddrive. Overall no ground breaking technologies, and Nintendo falls back to 3rd place (I don't think Nintendo can repeat what it did with the Wii with its next console)

what they won't do is release a wiiHD in 2 years because it's such a 'must have' item...67% of wii owners have hdtv and yet they still have their wii...50% of japanese have hdtvs yet wii is winning there by a large margin as well...hd is not as important to average consumers as most gamers think (>50% of hdtv owners don't even use hd sources)

88% of statistics are made up on the spot.

@ WhiteDevil & Sky Render

Are you joking about the glove idea or were you just not around in the late '80s?

Hell, you didn't need to be around in the 80's to know about the Power glove!!

There seems to be this misconception that technology exists in a void. It does not. It has been 20 years since the Power Glove debut. And guess what? We've gone forward immensely since then. The Power Glove used sonar to detect the glove position, very basic flex sensors to detect if a finger was "flexed" or "unflexed", and zero accelerometers.

Were Nintendo to develop a glove controller for the next genration, it would probably look something like this internally: http://www.skyrender.net/gaming_glove_design.png

Granted, that's a very very basic design not accounting for all manner of additional components (a controller expansion port, for example), but it gets the basic idea across.

Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

Nintendo will have better graphics and probably much expanded motion control -- 1-to-1 motion will work way better. I love the Wii, but honestly the control is shaky. Still more fun than button mashing, but it's just a start for what they can do.

Aside from motion, it's hard to see what MS and Sony can throw into their consoles after this gen.

Yea, this is what I see too. But the problem is that’s not enough. Never has a console come out where the improvements were “slightly better”.

In the PC world, you can release a $500 video card that’s only 50%, or even 20%, better then the last one, and it will sell. But that’s a different market then the console world.

I don’t see a system that does not blow the last generation away selling for $500, and I don’t see what can be done to make that system. Maybe a Cable Modem/router/Audio Receiver built in or something.

those numbers come from actual surveys of consumers

Bets:Missed by 420k I bet leo-j vg$500 that wii will sell 31 million by 7/31/08.  Sorry, I don't think he has enough vg$ to make it with all of u that wish you could. Hit, with room to spare I bet kingofwale a 1-week ban that wii Americas ltd sales>360 Americas ltd sales as of the numbers for week ending 7/05/08 (using vgchartz homepage #s)

Predictions:

Wii will sell 18-20mil by 12/31/07  CHECKWii will sell 45mil+ WW by 12/31/08Wii will surpass PS2 sales WW by 11/17/11 (5yr anniversary)Wii Fit will hit 12mil sales in 2009MKWii+SSBB+Wii Fit+SMG > 50 mil sales by 2010 > gta4+mgs+gt5+ff13+haze+lbp

Evolutionary, incremental improvement has always been the standard between console generations, and they've always sold. Really, the only "revolutionary" changes were the leap from 2D to 3D, and the Wii's control scheme.

There's plenty of room for improvement simply in things like graphics and physics, and if that's all that changes, the next gen will still do just fine (keep in mind the change won't be 20-50%, but more like 1,000-3,000%). I have a feeling we're going to see a lot of advancements in control/input methods though. For instance, a system that combines the technologies of the EyeToy and the Wii remote to create live motion capture.

The next gen will be just as exciting as every previous one has been.

I don't think we have to buy new tv's once we have a 1080P. Graphics will improve ofcourse. amBX gets much support in the next generation. Voice regonition will be new in this generation.

http://www.ibmeye.com/microsoft-to-bring-next-generation-xbox-chip-in-house/

PS4
Duo-Quad Cell processor
4GB RAM
1 TB harddrive 3,5"
Blu ray
PS Motion Eye + Gloves
Bluetooth Headset + voice chip (talk to NPC's) + camera (head tracking)
DC4 motion and rumble 2.0.

One package deal only. Otherwise the hardware doesn't get software support.

Nintendo might end up with low tech graphics and some VR glases. 3Dtv's are too far away and only innovaters will have one at that time. I think Nintendo wants to stay with the casuals.

After that generation finally stereoscopic video games.

I am thinking a lack of televisions... But that was already stated.
