Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will PS4 and NextBox launches suffer same fate as WiiU?

The Wii U suffered because it isn't offering anything more than the current consoles. If Shadow Fall is a release title, the PS4 will do fine. Yet to see the nextbox line up to be able to make a call on it.

For the PS4 and Xbox 3 to get a good start, Sony/MS need to kill off the PS3 and 360. Next gen systems can't compete with cheaper 7th gen alternatives in this economy, at least not without suffering considerably as a result.

Will PS4 and Xbox 3 have as slow a start as Wii U? Almost certainly not. But the WILL have many sales cannibalized by their predecessors if the PS3/360 are allowed to limp on for years after their successors release.

You may end up then getting normal people deciding they don't want to go along with it.  The PS3 being killed off means death to the current content on the shelves, because the PS4 won't play the games natively.  If the next XBox next the same, well then that will face similar issues.  What if the masses are content with ipad and tablet gaming as their normal outlet?

People can still play PS3 games on their actual PS3s. But releasing major PS3 games into the life of the PS4 isn't the best idea, the older console will cannibalize the new one, while games like Gran Turismo 6 could have been used to push PS4 hardware.

That is part of the situation here.  If the PS4 could play GT6 native, then people would consider buying it at this point, and get the PS4, because they know they can still play PS3 stuff.  Of course Sony is promising streaming, but that is going to require needed bandwidth.  You are very likely going to look at sluggishness early on.  Killing off the older console, particularly when the newer one doesn't play the same content, isn't a good idea either.
