Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 down 20%, 360 down 30% YoY. Time for a new generation?

price cuts across the board except Wii. Kow was right again. this is worse then even i expected.

could PS3 and 360 both global sales by end of March-April be even!!! the gap is only 1,471,197.

i wasn't going to post this second part but the gap could be anywhere from 440k-860k. this is not a prediction, just merely a thought.

Around the Network

I've been asking for new consoles across the board since late 2011, so I'm definitely ready for more.

It isn't that long ago that many here thought that things could last until late 2014 though.

Some still do, they're just in the minority somewhat now. It's amazine how quickly things can change.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I don't think its time for a new gen just yet when some of the games out today look like they are still PS2 gen.

Examples? I think you're over-reacting, and waning consumer interest dictates new console launches, no the graphical leap I feel.

If developers like Hideo Kojima, and Naughty Dog can do this, then there is no excuse.

Those games do look unbelivably good; as good or better than we'll see on the new consoles for a while. But saying some games still look PS2 is just over-dramatic.

The market dictates that new consoles are required every five-to-six years, otherwise this happens (huge declines in YoY sales) and the industry shrinks and smaller publishers are punished because they have the most trouble weathering the storm until the next cycle hits.  This late in the cycle only sequels are selling, and even the major sequels are in decline.

Look at industry sales in '05/'06 when 360 was an infant without quality games and Wii / PS3 hadn't released yet.  GameCube was literally dead.  It had nearly completely stopped selling.  Xbox was literally discontinued.  PS2 was the only viable console.  It was a rough two years.  DS, PSP, and PS2 were the only three systems carrying the weight, and the entire industry was heavily contracted.  I don't think 2011/2012 is any different.  New consoles are needed, otherwise the industry will eventually shrink itself into extinction.
