Adding it to Vita would be not viable, but how about making an optional external UMD drive that gamers could use to load their PSP UMDs on their PSV's memory cards?
This way PSV could have access to the whole PSP library, but without affecting its battery life, all the process could be done at home, or on the go, but without using PSV's batteries to run the UMD drive, and after loading the games the user wouldn't be forced to keep the drive linked to the portable.

I feel like UMD is a media format Sony wish to forget at this point.  However, an optional UMD-drive attachment for Vita, released at a reasonable price, would do absolute wonders in Japan in my opinion.  Would let them all keep their games collections, plus buy all the new releases, while having a future-proof console and being able to buy the PSV-only games that are on offer (slim pickings in Japan, but they are there).

I don't know if it's actually possible to make an attachment, but I don't see why it shouldn't be.  Would make the console really clunky, but it'll tide some people over until they can figure out a better solution.

That's the reason why I'd suggest an external UMD drive that gamers would use just to download UMD games on their PSV's memory, just like they do with PSP games from PSN. Once loaded the game they want to play, they could forget the UMD drive until they need to load another UMD. Yep, this could open the way to multiple use of the same PSP game UMD on more than one PSV, unless they devise a way to tie each drive or each disc to just one PSV at a time, but UMD and PSP have been cracked for such a long time that piracy must be several orders of magnitude bigger than the possible number of people playing at the same time the same copy of a game using such  drive.
