Forums - Gaming Discussion - David Cage: "Sequel Kills Creativity & Innovation"

David Cage has said that “sequels kill creativity and innovation”, adding that “many people want the same and if that’s what you offer them, they will gladly buy it”.

David Cage: “sequels kill creativity”

“The result is very simple,” explains Cage. “Gamers invest money in publishers having no interest in innovation”. So according to Cage we get keep getting repeats and numbered installments because that’s what we pay for. “[Gamers] encourage [publishers] to keep making the same game every Christmas, and everybody’s happy”.

For Cage that’s not the way to do it. “If you’re interested in innovation and believe that games could be more than shooters, then you realise that sequels kill creativity and innovation”. That’s why Beyond: Two Souls is going to be different. “We don’t give people what they expect. We want to give them something they want without knowing they want it”.

Can anyone translate this better.

Sorry it was translated with Google translate lol. It's the best I could find.

^^ New ip's bring new ideas that feel fresh and push the medium forward. That would be my summary.

Okay I found a different article talking about the same thing. It makes more sense now.

David Cage calling out Call of Duty?? IT'S ON!

So he's telling people not to buy sequels? And that we should let game series die after the first entry. Ridiculous comment, in makes sense but still stupid, so no Mario Bros 3, half-life 2, team fortress 2.

I think he's calling out the annual franchises that are constantly being released with very little to no innovation.

Oh, then I completley agree with him. Annual release titles are a plauge, even fifa, they could just patch the previous game with the new players.

Whilst I usually think this guy is a pretentious clown. On this I agree with him. Pretty sick of the annual rehash of certain games. On sports games by all means re release when there is a significant upgrade, but otherwise just some much cheaper DLC would suffice to update player/club data.

Sport games are a very good example. Very little innovation goes into making a sequel for a Fifa or an NBA 2K. All that really changes is the roster for the team because every summer big trades go down in the sporting world.

After how good heavy rain was I am excited for Beyond: TS.

OT: He is right though, if people keep buying the same crap over and over again why would any of the big publishers bother taking a risk that will sell far less, I think the issue is so many gamers can't broaden their horizons from Cod/fifa/nba2k and continue to support these same series year after year without giving anything else a real shot.
